I just picked up my new Sony KD34XBR960 CRT the other day (very nice by the way) and now I need to upgrade to my first progressive scan DVD player. Cost is not really an option would like to stay around or under the $500 price range. This set does have an HDMI interface so would that be the way to go with these new players coming out such as Panny S97 and sony DVP-NS975V? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

The Panny or Sony are good options. Just make sure to check out reviews once they are released. Another excellent option is the Denon 2910 (for a little more than your $500 budget).

First of all, let me congratulate you on owning probably the best TV on the market bar none, if you're talking about value, performance, etc. and don't care how much space it takes up or how much it weighs.

That being said, the hardware in that ungodly TV of yours is going to do a slam bang job with anything you feed at it.

Heck, if you bought a Denon 2900 right now, which is still arguably a better unit overall than the excellent 2910, for about $699 worst case scenario (Crutchfields), you'd be getting one ofTHE best 480p picture via component video input that's out there within a reasonable price range, and your TV would have a field day with that input. The 2900 has better audio up and down vs. the 2910.

Just something to consider. ;)

Actually, the new HDMI and DVI players are unnecessary on this TV. I would get myself a quality player that uses a Silicon Image chip and a copy of the service manual for the TV. With the manual you can greatly improve the performance of your TV. I would also search for tweaks in the CRT part of the forum. Look for information on...

SYSM, SHF0, RDRV, RCUT, BDRV, BCUT, GDRV, GCUT, RYR, RYB, GYR, GYB, MHLY, MVLY, MHYL and so on...

A Denon DVD-2200 would fit your price range. There are several for sale on ebay.

I would also research a Onkyo SP-1000, Integra 10.5, Denon DVD-2900, Denon DVD-3800 and Arcam FMJ DV-27A. The 2900 or 3800 can be found used in your price range on ebay at times.
