hi all....just joined this forum looking for advise.... i have philips 7422 hd ready 42" lcd tv..recently i chucked out my samsung dvd player(which played dvd very well) in favor of sony dvpns78 upscaling player under the impression i would be able to watch near hd quality..however to my disappontment

1) 1080 p upscaling looks via hdmi connection terrible than component out.also not able to fill entire screen as this option is grayed out on tv

2) whenever i play dvd, it shows 480p..is not it low quality? but the images i am getting are stunning..i heard that upscaling dvd player can upscale to 720 i.e near hd quality..why is not that happening,,.,,imagine transition from 480 p to 720p

3) some dvd (like abyss) refuse to go full screen, with top and bottom black bars..ny idea..zooming thru dvd player option creatwes pixelation..

kinldy advise..also please note that i am from india...are the dvd encoded in same way globally ?

regards

Try setting the output to 1080i instead of 1080p. it has been stated several times here, and I have also seen for myself, that this player looks fairly grainy when outputting 1080p.

I bought the DVPNS77 this evening and I have it hooked to my Sony 55A2000 SXRD. It is outputting 1080i and looks great. 1080p is not so good.
thanx norske..one other thing was trying to set up home theater...i have one old lg home theater sytem which has a built in dvd player decoder(all in one) with 2 l/r , 1 center, and 2 satellite speaker with dolby output..however since the dvd player part of it is damaged, i conncetd audio out(red and white cable) from sony dvd player to audio in of lg system...i selected AUX and getting sound from L/R speakers only..no sound in rest of speakers..any way out ,.does it means that aux connection cannot play surround speakers and limited to l/r main speakers only,,,

Set 1:1 pixel mapping on the display, if possible.

Turn off any video enhancement modes.

Use a calibration disc. Brief notes here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...&post9889995

DVDs can provide some fine images, but they are Standard Definition, not High Definition. DVDs are recorded at 480i (NTSC) or 576i (PAL).

THE ABYSS is an example of a non-anamorphic widescreen title. The image will display within a 4:3 frame. This is bad, but there is nothing you can do except zoom. For more info on anamorphic encoding, see: http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articl...hic/index.html

Almost the same way. DVDs follow the old TV systems of NTSC and PAL. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PAL . North America is NTSC, India is PAL. But you mention a 480 signal so I suspect you are able to play both types.
