I just purchased a Sony KDS-60A3000 TV to replace my Sony KDF-55E2000 model.

I hooked up the optical/toslink from the TV to my HTIB surround sound system (5.1) and turned on the TV to a digital channel (QAM signal through cable to watch the Baltimore-Steelers game on CBS-HD) but there was no sound coming through my surround sound speakers.

There was sound from my TV speakers but not through surround sound speakers.

This same setup worked fine with my KDF-55E2000.

I tested a different optical cable and no change. I also tried my xbox 360 through optical in the surround sound system and it worked.

I tried changing the settings on the TV to "audio out" (instead of "TV speakers") and nothing happened. I also fiddled with the "fixed/variable" controls that owners of this TV know about.

Any idea what could be the problem?

Also, I looked into the optical cable after it was plugged into the TV and there was an optical/red laser transmitting...I don't know if that helps or not.

THANKS

I don't know if i'm posting this in the correct place, BUT here i go anyways... cuz i'm a rebel like that...

i just set up a friend's Sony LCD tv, and here is some information that i found out that might concern your set-up. It seems that the digital/optical output is not controlled by the variable/fixed sound option in the menu system of the sonyTV. In other words, whether the option is selected to variable OR fixed, the sound output from the TV is always fixed (when going thru optical).

However, when the sound is output thru the analog (RCA-red/white), the TV menu options DO control this. Meaning that the sound output can be variable (controlled by TV) or fixed (controlled by HT) - when outputting thru analog.

Therefore, it seems to me that the TV cannot control the digital signal.

Other notes: The TV that i have worked on is a Sony KDL 46W4100 flatscreen LCD. THe input is from a comcast explorer 8300 HD DVR via HDMI. I was trying to get the TV remote to control the sound level coming out of the home theater (leave the HT at constant volume), but unfortunately, after 40 minutes on the phone with sony in India, it seems this is not possible... and it seems that this particular sony tech CSR doesn't know the difference between a digital output and an analog output, etc.

So now, i'm going to have to figure out the code to have teh comcast remote control the HT for volume.

Anyways, enjoy your TV (i have the KDS 60A2000 and LOVE IT)!
