Help on purchasing speakers.

I will soon be purchasing an Onkyo TX-SR605 audio reveiver and was wondering if you could help me out on picking some good speakers. This is the first audio receiver I will have purchased and I appreciate any help you could give me. Thanks.

Budget? Room Size? How many speakers? Sub? HT or Music?
I am looking to spend $500 or less. 7.1 channel speakers. I will use this set up for gaming(360, PS3) and movies(DVD, Blu-Ray) mostly. The room is about 550 sq.ft., and I will sit about 7 ft. from the TV.

You will get better sound quality by sticking with 5.1 for now. You could always add two other speakers later.

It's hard to get a whole system for $500

You could also run without a sub, and just purchase the speakers for now.

I would make some sacrifices now to get the best possible speakers.

You have a big room and a small budget. That isn't going to take you very far in a 7.1 set up. I would think a lot of people would suggest something like the athena point 5 system if you can find it or even the HSU ventriliquist which are in your budget, but the speakers and sub are not going to do well in a room that big. I think the best bet would be start with a Dayton sub from Parts Express (it's a kit you build and it is fairly simple) and then see what you can get with the $300 or so you have left for the other 5. Forget 7.1. 5.1 is going to be hard enough unless you can spend more money.
I'd buy stereo speakers now for the 500$ and add the rest of the system as budget catches up.
Forgetting about the previous budget, how much would it cost in order to get the proper speakers?

$800-$1500 JMO
Ok so tell me what the best speakers for my situation will be and I will buy them a little at a time. Thanks again.
You should get out and audition speakers yourself. After all it's your ears that will have to listen to the system not mine or anyone elses. Every speaker will sound different. Take your time with this, and have fun. Bring your own DVD's a CD's to audition.

Find a PSB dealer, and audition some PSB Alpha's.

A Energy dealer, and audition some RC Mini's.

A Paradigm dealer, and audition the new Monitor line.

All good stuff above. Just don't look at anything that has a woofer smaller than 5.25". Smaller will not work well in a room that is almost 600 sq. ft. You know your room is bigger than my first apartment in Manhattan
.

Go for a sub and two nice bookshelf speakers. I personally like Infinity Primus 160's for the money.

SVS system

SVS is having a sale on their silver or white speakers and systems. The black speakers and systems are still regular price. If you don't mind having silver or white components, SVS has some great deals that are worth checking out. Go to svsound, then click on "News & Reviews."

You can start with just a pair of speakers and center channel or even just a subwoofer. Or, you can get a 5.1 speaker set for under $1,000 shipped. I'm hoping to sell my Kenwood HTiB on craigslist so I can buy the SVS SBS-01 5.1 set in silver.

silver.

Thanks everyone for helping me out on this. I really appreciate it. I think that I am going to go with the SBS-01 5.1 Surround Sound System Silver with PB10-NSD subwoofer, as it seems to be a great deal. Thanks again.

Excellent system. Make sure you talk to SVS about the sub and your room. You may or may not want or need to up-grade the sub. E-Mail them and ask their opinion. They are awesome guys, and will help you and not over sell you.
