I am catching h3ll from friends of mine because I want to buy another Onkyo receiver (the new 702). They say that unless you are buying a $5000 reciever that Sony is just as good if not better than say Onkyo or Yamaha. They also state that they are built no better than Sony...

Help!

If you like Onkyo, buy another Onkyo.

Best thing to do is go out and try to listen to both machines, side by side, using the same source and speakers. Let your ears tell you what sounds best.

Personally, I'd go for an Onkyo before I'd buy a Sony, all things being equal.

There are many good brands to choose from. You could ask 10 people here which brand is the best, and you'd probably get 10 different answers. :)

But none of them would be Sony. ;)

The Sony ES line is pretty nice but their entry level stuff leaves alot to be desired.

The Sony DE line is nothing special, although a recent issue of Sound & Vision bench tested a DE model and the results were better than I would have expected. There's nothing wrong w/ the ES line, but, in my opinion, there are better choices at the price points of the ES AVRs.

Between Sony ES and Onkyo, I'd buy Onkyo.

The new 702 is a great receiver. There's really nothing wrong with it, quite the opposite actually.

The new ES line is very different from the models before. The DA1000 is one of the most powerfull analog amps in it's price class, and new digital models DA2/3/5/7/9000 are beyond comparison in continuous multichannel power and powercube stability.

Except the first run was recalled, and there have been rumors of other design problems...

Don't get me wrong ,I have liked some ES products in the past and hope Sony can get it together, but I'd take a pass for now.

Personally, for a receiver I would look to Harman/Kardon (AVR7300) first, although the new Sherwood Newcastle R-965 would get consideration also.

Landroval,

Do you have a 702? I was very close to buying one tonight for my second system but i would like to hear some reviews first. I would like to hear your opinions if you have it or have heard it.

Thanks,

Dalton
