Help picking out a receiver - First time build.

So I've been looking at this Combo at Costco canada
http://www.costco.ca/Onkyo%C2%AE-HT-RC330-5.1-channel-Receiver-and-Klipsch%C2%AE-HDT300-5.1-Home-Theatre-Bundle.product.100089486.html

seems really decent for what's available up here. But I've discovered I could just buy the speakers for 310 bucks on amazon. That leaves ~380 bucks for a receiver ( if I were to spend the same amount of cash).

I am on a budget, could you suggest a better or as good as 5.1 receiver for me? That might save me a bit of cash?!

Thanks!

I'm in a bit of the same boat, looking for a new avr. It can be a little hard finding recommendations here being (I assume you are as well) Canadian. In the US, the access to products and prices that us Canadians just can't find is, well, frustrating to say the least. When an American suggests a piece that could differ in price wildly, sometimes easily double:(. As for the avr above, it's on my short list for its reliability track record and decent feature sheet. Hope it helps! Plus, two extra channels:)

yeah I've been trying to shop around. And I travel to the US often, so some models, if there's that big of a difference I could probably get my hands on one and take it home.

The only issue I have is I know I can get those specific speakers for a little over 300 bucks.

That receiver isn't even made any more, I can only find them use or refurbished.

And for a much cheaper price than what it would be if I bought it from Costco.

I've been looking at some Denons as well, but I just hear Onkyo is best bang for buck. I was looking at another Onkyo (can't recall model off the top of head) but it had 20 less watts per channel, and 2 less inputs.

Prices have somewhat evened out between the two countries.

However selection and availability is where its a kick in the pants.

while that looks nice. I really will never have 7.1 in that room, it's not shaped correctly for it, I'd have a speaker sitting in the middle of the room.

I do like  http://www.visions.ca/Catalogue/Category/Details.aspx?categoryId=143&productId=22285&sku=HTRC550

and

kind of leaning towards the Yamaha, slightly cheaper.

but unsure. I looked up the 550, aparently its more or less a rebadge of the 525.

The Harman-Kardon AVR 700 is $399 (CA) at the Best Buy Canada website, with free shipping; that's what I would recommend.
From my limited (SIGNIFICANT!) browsing here, I've gotten the feeling that the onkyo products suffer from some poor reliability issues. They were first on my mind when I began looking as I was familiar with their products especially the Integra stuff back when I had a little more disposable income (ie, pre marriage and kid!). No longer are they really on my radar. My .02
Also the Yammy 575 was $299 at future shop last week. 2 extra channels frees up the option of passive bi-amping....although that's a whole other bag of worms around here!
H/k 1700 on Canadian amazon is 579. I've heard that for some reason the h/k stuff is much more expensive in Canada. However I've owed an h/k in the past and thought the world of it.
Best Buy Canada has the Harman-Kardon AVR700 for $399 (CA), with free shipping.

Don't pay ANY attention to power ratings, as they are all derived from an 8 ohm resistor load, which tells you almost nothing useful.

How they sound with REAL SPEAKERS connected is totally unrelated.

In any case, the H-K 700 sounds good and has plenty of power for almost any speakers.

The sound quality of the Yamaha and Onkyo receivers now on the markets really sucks IMO.

Sorry, what I was meaning to say is the h/k 1700 is 579 in Canada and 299 in us (both through amazon of their respective countries). You mentioned that you do travel to the states from time to time. That's as good a reason as any for a jaunt down south!
I recently shipped an amplifier to someone in Canada.

He rented a mailbox at a mailbox store near the border in Washington and used that store's physical address to have the unit shipped to.

Just a thought.

The HK AVR 700 has definitely piqued my interest. However I'm also now heavily leaning towards the Sony STRDH540. would save me over 150 bucks, and has more features. I haven't read a bad thing about it. And I am going Entry level here, plus it gives the possibility of 4k upgrades in the future.

On a side note as I now have a few days of reading into Receivers, I am finding it easier to figure things out. Speakers on the other hand, I'll have to open a thread up in that forum I think haha

My last system was a 5.1 HITB samsung that came with a dvd player. so I'm really hoping to step up the quality and expand-ability by going with a AV receiver.
