I've been running my HTPC for years using Media Center (XP, then Vista, then Win7). I've got things working pretty well - using Media Browser for movies/TV and using MediaControl to allow MCE remote control commands, subtitle controls, .MKV ff and rew via the remote.

However, there are some things that are kludgy for me (switching .MKV audio streams or subtitle streams is unintuitive and often locks up either Media Center or FFDShow or the entire machine).

It seems that development/support of MediaControl has died on the vine.

Is there an alternative to MediaControl to enable the stuff it currently does within Media Center?

Or should I perhaps look at a replacement for Media Center/Media Browser (i.e. XBMC)?

What is the prevailing wisdom on this dilemma?

Thanks for any input.

What about MKV playback - specifically fast forward and rewing, subtitles, audio streams. Is all of this possible within Win7 Media Center without using Media Control?
