Help Please - Plasma Info Needed - Noob here.

Hello All,

I'm interested in buying a plasma TV for my boyfriend and I'm not sure what model to get. I frequently visit internet forums and was not too surprised to find one for plasma TV's. I have been reading this sight for some time and determined that a Panasonic is the way too go but the only issue is that I'm not sure if the consumer or commercial model is the way to go. The two models I'm stuck in between is the TH-50PX50U and the TH-50PHD8UK. First question, is the picture noticeably better on either of the TV. I'm ultimately looking for the best picture possible but if its barely noticeable it doesn't really matter. He will be hooking up a DVD playing (prolly with HDMI, whatever that is), a XBOX (HD), and BOSE surround system (lifestyle 25 I think). Does the commercial model have the inputs needed because it seems to have less then the consumer model.

I have been to 6th ave and was quoted a price for the TH-50PX50U.

This is about how much I would like to spend. Would the TH-50PHD8UK be better at the price or is the TH-50PX50U good enough due to the in home warranty? Also the sales man said that the commercial model messes with electrical devices and radio, is this true?

Thanks for all your help. :)

Don't beleive the spew about the messing with radio devices and such I beleive it is a lie.

I would say go with the TH-50PX50U if it is in your price range. The picture will probably be the same with with either of the tv's but you get more inputs with the TH-50PX50U.

Is this normal to have a girlfriend buy you a 50 inch plasma tv? If so where are these girls?

Thanks for answering. I sure hope that it's just BS but the more I read about all of these TV's the more I doubt myself as to what the right decision is. I also am not too crazy about the speaker panel on the 50PX since it's grey and the all black looks cooler. I am leaning toward the PX because I can get it at a B&M store instead of having to deal with the internet if something goes wrong, I just don't want to loose picture quality for a minimal price difference.
Dude, Its Eminem's girl... so she can afford this toy for her man ; )

The picture on the two models is identical. The main difference is the amount and type of inputs, the lack of speakers, and stand on the comercial model, and teh additonal settings on the comercial model.

If you plan on using the Bose system then the speakers thing is not a problem. How are you going to mount the display? On the wall, or a stand? Stands can be expensive (200-500), so not spending money on something you wont use is always some thing to consider.

The bigger factor should be what inputs are needed... figuring that out should help make it clear which to buy. The Comercial units dont coem with HDMI, but it can be added for 200 bucks. It will have a PC connector, and component and composit inputs. If the bose system has swithcing then you might be able to run devices through it into the display.
He will be putting it on a stand that he will buy himself so I'm not worried about that. He already has the Bose set up from previous TV...I was thinking that maybe it's a good thing that there is a speaker directly on the TV so he's not forced to listen to that thing on surround 24/7 ? And yes you guessed it right I'm Em's g/f lol
Bump for more input. I need more opinions please this is a big purchase for me and I don't want to regret it later.
In reguards to teh souround thing:

Most tunners (A/V), will swith modes depending on the input. So if your watching HD content that has 5.1 it will come out of the systme that way. If the signal is only stereo it will change to just the fronts and center.

One other thing to keep in mind is the styling of the units. I know my girl likes the look of our 8uk and the clean black bizal and no speakers. It looks like a big picture... slick.

If you can find out exaclty what inputs he will need I can help you figure out if the 8uk can handel his gear right out of the box. Also if you get the model number of the boes system I can see if it has any switching built in....

What will he use for a program source... Cable TV, Satellite or OTA? For Cable TV or OTA programs you're better off going with a consumer TV that includes a CableCARD slot and internal tuners. With Satellite I'd recommend the commercial version for the additional picture tweaks.

At this point in time... you're best off to wait until we see what's being demoed at the 2006 CES International Exhibit in Las Vegas January 5 - 8. Who knows??? Maybe that "lucky dog" (I wish I had a girlfriend like you :D ) will wind up with a 1080p PDP instead?
