which one?

Due to the horrid audio of the new Star Wars ANH when I played it with plain DD, I wanted to try EX for the first time. By way of explanation as to why I have not tried EX yet, I only have the front and center speakers hooked up to the receiver at this time. So, I didn't really think there was much to be gained with EX processing. Then I thought, just maybe, EX processing might help with some of the dialog problems with ANH.

But when I looked on the remote, I saw that my Sony D4ES seems to have 3 DD EX options to choose from, A,B, and C. I tried each of them, but I couldn't tell any difference between them. I did think there might have been some improvement over the plain DD.

Has anybody had experience with these different EX options on the Sony, and what the difference is? Also, if you don't have any surround speakers hooked up, is there still an advantage to EX processing on discs that are have EX processing?

Thanks much

These are not Dolby modes, but Sony's own theater simulation modes.

Cinema Studio EX A: Reproduces Sony's "Cary Grant Theater" cinema production studio.

Cinema Studio EX B: Reproduces Sony's "Kim Novak Theater" cinema production studio.

Cinema Studio EX C: Reproduces Sony's scoring stage.

Roger,

Hey, thanks a bunch.

Hmm. Now I'm not sure how to select the standard EX processing. Or does it just automatically engage when you play a disc with EX encoded?

You must have gotten a defective disc. The audio was so clear on the my ANH disc that I could easily hear edits in the dialogue (and this was with 4 surround speakers firing).

EX decoding only works in the surrounds, by converting 2 surround channels to 3. In order to take advantage of EX decoding, you'll need a pair of speakers at your sides (for the left & right surround channels) and a couple of speakers behind you (for the surround-back channel). The results are worth it as you have distinct surround localization to your left, to your right and behind you. But it don't do anything for dialogue intelligibility.

Good Luck,

Sanjay
