Dear all,

I'm a newbie to the PC audio area and would like to get some advice on getting a high fidelity sound card/ audio converter that can be used for listening to music and for 5.1/7.1 surround sound (watching movies). My current sound card is very old (a leftover from my old pc) and I would like to upgrade to something approaching the audio quality from Linn etc (eg Linn Akurate, Klimax
)

I would appreciate any recommendations or feedback on your experience.

My preference is:
  • prefer that active speakers be directly connected to the card/device
  • budget - up to around USD 2000
  • have Multi channels
  • avoid PCI card if possible (PCIe is fine)

My current setup is:
  • Media Software - using xbmc, JRiver Media Centre, PowerDVD and VLC
  • Speakers - 2 pairs of B&O Beolab 3 active speakers, a Velodyne active sub directly connected to the sound card. I will be getting a central speaker soon
  • OS - Windows 7 64bit
  • HDD - Intel 120 GB SSD with 2 x 2TB hard drives
  • sound card - Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum
  • remote - use Ipad 2 and xbmc constellation for 2 way remote controlling xbmc

The HTPC is quiet enough and doesn't intrude on listening to music or watching movies

Based on my limited understanding and reading posts from here and other forums I've narrow my short list to -
  1. RME Fireface UCX
  2. RME HDSPe AIO with analog expansion card
  3. Steinberg MR816 CSX
  4. LynxTwo B ( not sure if active speakers can connect directly)

Thanks again for your help and time.

Kind Regards

William
