Hello All,

I wish to build in wall shelves to house my components. The problem is, that there are three or four circuits in the studs in this area that feed lights, outlets etc. (building the shelves where there are no wires is not an option). I am wondering what is the best and safest method to move them out of the way. I am thinking I could cut the wires and add some more wire to have them run either above or below where the shelves will be, however, I am not sure of the proper way to accomplish this. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Paul

I don't know what the code is up in Canada. Everywhere I've lived here in the US, you can do what you are thinking. The connections need to be make inside a box and the box can't be buried in the wall. It must be accessable. Maybe you can put in access panels in the sides of the shelving to get at them and still pass OK.

The other thing to consider is how many different circuits they will allow you to put inside a single box. I know here 2 is acceptable. Don't know your code or your layout to know if this is an issue or not.

Thanks for your reply. I assume the boxes you refer to are junction boxes?

For my set-up the boxes will be just attached to studs that are accessible as it is my furnace room on the other side of my theatre room and the walls are not covered.

Yes I meant junction boxes. I don't see why it would be any problem as long as the boxes are accessible from the back side of the wall.
