Help! Samsung 58-inch vs. Pioneer 50-inch

Sammy PN58a650 for $2600 vs Pioneer PDP-5020FD 50-Inch 1080p KURO for $2390.

Both within my budget. I sit about 12' from TV. I can get size with the Sammy but detail with the Pioneer.

Need your expert advice - what woudl you do? I know detail is great but size seems to trump all . . .

PS _ I did note taht the Pioneer product was not sold direct by Amazon - but through a group called "6th Avenue". Their price is quite a bit cheaper than Amazon's . . .

Samsung 650 has that ugly (IMO) ToC red bezel. If you want 58" plasma, why not go for Panny pz800u? It's about $2600 too and I think it is a better TV than the Sammy. But since you are sitting 12' away, I think a 50" set would be more than adequate and the Pio would be the clear winner, again, in my opinion. If you go with the Pio, look around--for about $2600 you can get it bundled with a Pio blu-ray player.

Thats my vote.....

+1. chris is right that extra size makes a huge difference go for the 58" over the 50".
i sit about the same distance, maybe longer, from my 50' panny and its a comfortable viewing distance. it seemed large at first but all tv's shrink in the mind over time. if you already have a 50" go bigger, if not id go ahead and nab the pioneer.
I had a 57" RPTV and was going to replace it with a 50" KURO but I decided that @ 12.5' a 50" would be too small especially when viewing letterboxed movies.

So I went with a 52" LCD which I loved but the small letterboxed viewing area and poor viewing angle of the LCD were deal breakers.

I compared a Panasonic 58" 800u and a Samsung 58" 650 ended up getting the Samsung because the picture color was a bit better to me and the price was about $500 less than the Panny. This was after 3 hrs collectively watching them in the same store with both remotes in hand so I could adjust anything I wanted for comparison.

If I could afford a 60" Pioneer it would be in my viewing room.

Main point is I would go with a bigger picture if you watch many movies. If you mainly watch TV the 50" just might do it. IMHO

Aside from size, your details should not be lost on your Sammy once properly setup.

I agree on the Samsung choice. 58" is just a sweet size.

While I haven't owned a Panasonic, I do own a 50" 650 and picture quality is extremely good. The "ToC" is really subtle and nothing to turn yourself off over.

I am sure he did not ask opinions on the design. If he didn't like it, he wouldn't of mentioned it.

Anyway, the Pioneers are very nice, and I would have to give the edge to in overall PQ, but the difference in size can not be argued, nor sacrificed IMO.

Get the Samsung, it is a very nice set, and post calibration, provides an even better picture.

58 inches is only 16% more than 50 inches ! 8/50 = 16%

in a straight line you are correct. but as nirv points out your viewing the entire screen area of the 16:9 display and the 58" has ~34.5% more screen area to view than the small 50" model and that is a huge difference.

Really? How many have you owned?
Samsungs are well known for being the least susceptible for screenburn along with LG. With Panasonic and Pioneer being the better ones.

Did you mean to say most susceptible? In reply to this and the previous poster's thoughts, I had a 58A550 briefly and IR was really bad on it. It was brand new granted but I had it hooked up to a HTPC and found myself having to run the patterns program to get rid of all sorts of IR from either icons or letterboxing etc. Didn't keep it long enough to determine if it got better with time.

I've had my 650 for 6 months no issues with IR or BI.

How long did you own yours.

Watched 3 letter boxed movies right out of the box the day we got it. Hav played both PS3 and Wii games on it for hours. I have never had to run my scrolling bars.

What precautions did you take to prevent IR or BI on your 550? Anyone owning any plasma should take reasonable efforts to prevent BI.

Truly if this really was an issue with Samsung today you would be reading about all over the owner threads and Samsung wouldn't be in the top 3 choices of plasmas. BI occurs on any brand.

nolanski and I represent the vast majority of Sammy owners who experienced little to no issues with IR or burn in.

I suppose I could do a tit for tat and mention the buzzing and blotching some kuro owners have mentioned. I suspect however a kuro purchaser is more likely not to experience either issue.
