I recently purchased the Marantz NR1402, which looks to be a good solution for my basic 3.1 setup, provided I am able to set it up the audio correctly. I use a Pioneer 5080 Plasma, a black macbook for DVD playback and netflix, and now the Marantz1402. No cable/satellite or blu-ray.
The lack of two optical inputs is giving me trouble. My prior receiver had two, one run to the plasma, the other (through a minijack) to the macbook headphone in. The audio I was receiving was not digital; sound was only coming into the left and right front speakers, not the center channel.
Now on the marantz the only optical in is running to the TV. The second digital input is a coaxial input. I need this to be run to the Macbook. The only way that I could find to get this to work would be to purchase a coaxial in/optical out converter. So I purchased this on monoprice:

I get sound for the TV, which is simple enough. For the macbook, I have not been able to get sound. I have a coaxial cable running from the receiver to the adapter, followed by the optical/minijack cable to the macbook headphone in. I have two questions:
1. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong with this setup? I at first wondered if I was supposed to use the digital audio out jack on the macbook, but I don't get any sound from that either. Have I messed up the coaxial to optical switch? Any other ideas on what I should do?
2. Is it even possible to get digital audio from a setup like this? I assumed that if I could plug into the macbook's digital audio out jack, I would get audio that runs through both the fronts and the center. I don't know if this is the case. Is it possible to use a macbook jack to get digital audio from the receiver? If so, am I on the right track?
I suspect this is a simple problem, so thank you all for reading. Let me know what I've missed, or if I need to approach the problem differently.
