went to 6th ave electronics and talked into sony wega rear projection lcd 41" - last years model (gray and black shell -new one is all gray/silver).

talked to brother about purchase(he is a tech guy) and was told might have problems with bulb. HE told me to check out this site and that I could get some useful feed back.

Very confused on what to purchase. I want newer technology and don't know where to start.

Don't know if Sony Wega was the right purcahse.

Thanks for any input

Just do a few quick seaches, for Sony LCD and bulb.

Essentially when this TV came out, they had a problem with the original phillips bulb. There were several workarounds tried prior to discovering the true cause of the problem.

What would happen is that the tv would make a buzzing sound when it was trying to turn on. Eventually the red light would blink about 40 times, and the TV wouldn't come on.

Once Sony discovered problem, they started replacing original Phillips light bulb with an Osram bulb. So, many with the problems called Sony and got an Osram bulb.

Later on, Phillips got the bulb fixed and Sony started using them again.

So, do some searching and don't worry if you aren't having problems. The TV was a fine purchase.

Presumably you're talking about a 42", right, the KF-42WE610? This set is referred to around here as the "GWIII". There are hundreds of threads about this TV, so you probably want to poke around and see what you can find. The thread which talks about the "GWIII Buzz" is the one where bulb issues are discussed.

However, it would seem that Sony has fixed this issue for the most part, so you shouldn't really encounter this any more (and if by some chance you do, they'll give you a new bulb under warranty and everything will be fine).
