Help to chose projector for a basement

596 Views 10 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Luminated67
Hi all,

New to this, I am considering putting a screen and projector in the basement instead of a TV. Main use will be movies (Netflix and other FHD and UHD/HDR sources) and gaming (Xbox one X, PS4 PRO) and maybe some sport (streaming, 720p-1080p)

Considering the layout of the room, the screen will likely be in front of the window (small window, this is a basement). As for the projector location, it could either be on a shelf being the couch (wall to wall distance is 5.2meters/17ft so the projector will likely be 15ft+ to the screen and the viewing distance pretty much the same, a few inches less) or it could be ceiling mounted however if that's the case, as I have 2 different height ceilings in the basement, the projector would only be like 6ft from the screen.

Any tips, recommandations on best projector and ideal set up would be appreciated. Hoping to not go above $2,000 CAD.

Will add photos shortly

Thanks

Edit: if ceiling mounted, I am thinking of mounting to that wooden beam. 3rd option would be to put the projector on a coffee table.

Epson 4010 or even a refurbished 5040 if 4K is required. A leftover 4000 will work also. If you can give up 4K the Epson 3100 is also an excellent choice and is way below your budget. Non of the 4K DLP's can be shelf mounted in your budget. Sony 45es will have the best picture of any of them except the 5040 but of course is 1080p and should be right at your budget. The white room will give you serious reflective issues so unless your willing to paint an ALR screen (expensive) would also help.
If you’re going to do a good amount of gaming check the input lag of the pj you’re considering. We’re into first person shooters and I personally ended up going with a 1080p dlp model with 16.4 ms lag. Just something to think about.
The Epson models mentioned above will do nicely.
The reflections from the walls will affect the black level/contrast in a negative way. If possible, the room would require treatment to reduce them.
If the room can't be helped, an grey or ALR screen are suggested. ALR screens/paints don't have to be expensive.

Thanks for the recommandations. I was actually looking at getting a refurbished Epson 5040ub, will probably go for this. Anything I need to be careful of and check with these refurbished models?

Will it be better ceiling mounted 6ft from the screen (viewers seating at 14-15feet) or just out on a shelf being the coach?

As for room, painting is not an option so I will look I to the different screen options.

At 6ft the maximum image size of the HC5040 would only be 60in. There are some short throw 1080P options that will work at 6ft, such as the BenQ HT2150ST, and will throw a 120in image at 6ft-1in.

If you have kids, I'd suggest ceiling mounting rather than coffee table.

There's lot of queries similar to yours and I have a kind of stock answer here:

Looking at both of your photos I’m wondering could you not mount the screen on the window wall which has the dropped ceiling, then all you would need is a ceiling mount where the pole was able to be adjusted to compensate for the height difference.

Projector Ceiling Mount LESHP Vaulted Bracket with Adjustable Extension Pole to 26.7", for LCD DLP Projector https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01N5JTJ1G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_DjdzDb54AFWGA

I know this is a cheap example of a mount but it’s more to show that there’s options out there to adjust the distance the projector sits from the ceiling.

Alternatively if you wanted to mount the projector on a shelf on the back wall if you got a Sony HW45 it would give you a 120” screen right it the sweet spot of its zoom range.

Even an Epson 5040 would be quite similar if placed on the back wall.

That's actually what I was thinking, having the screen on the side where the ceiling is lower, however, this is not ideal as the wife wants the sofa there.....

Looks like there is a consensus for the Epson 5040, I will probably get one soon

I would personally go check out the Sony HW45 as well. I know it’s not 4K but the image it throws is truly amazing.
