Does anyone know whether a GreyHawk 100" or 107" wide screen(16:9) too much for G1000? Has anyone tried it? Alan?

I took my G1000 over to DeanM's place and projected some movies

onto his perforated GrayHawk. With an ISCO or Panamorph on a non-

perf screen I think 8' wide would be fine, 9' wide would be getting

dim in some of the darker scenes.

I have 800+ hours on the bulb. Soon it will be time to pay the piper...

My DILA is also calibrated, so it won't get much dimmer, not that it's

dim by most standards.


We zoomed down to a 96" screen since Dean has a larger screen than a

G1000 could drive. Mind you his G15 looks rather stunning on it.


I'd guess with a ISCO or Panamorph you'd be very happy.

Thanks for your feedback. I will be getting a paramorph and a non-perf screen. Since Stewart does provide custom framing, I'm thinking 100" may work without too much loss in detail.


How many hours were on your DILA projector? How big was Dean's Screen? Did you zoom down the size to fit a 96" wide image?

I have been considering the GrayHawk screen to replace my current screen, which is a Draper Cineperm M1300 65" x 116" (1.85:1 ratio). I am hoping the GrayHawk 1.85:1 66" x 122" will not be too big for my projector. My projector is an XGA 2,000 lumens lcd. The current image is very bright on my Draper screen, so I am hoping it will still be acceptable on the similar sized GrayHawk. Thoughts?

I've got a G15 and ISCO lens with 1500 (-calibration) lumens output, on a 156" wide 16:9 Grayhawk perforated screen and think that it looks great.


With 2000 lumens and a 122" wide screen, you should get a nice and bright picture as long as you have reasonable light control.


I have spotlights that shine on the seating to eat and read by, and the screen washout is minimal, but daylight would easily wash the scren image out.


Of course most of my movie watching is with all of the room lights off as it provides the best looking picture.

Just thought I'd resurrect this thread as it helped me out a bit with the AVS special. Without having a sample, I've been debating what material to get for my 10 foot wide screen, G11, and soon to be Panamorph. Dean's screen is about 95 sq.ft. by my figuring and mine will be 54 sq.ft. With 1500 lumens, he is getting (1500/95*.85) 13.4 ft. lamberts. My size screen will get (1000/54*.85) 15.7 ft. lamberts. Of course this is all conjectured on JVC giving honest numbers on both projectors. In any case, even if the output is significantly less (750-800 lumens)the picture should still be darn good - in a darkened room of course.


There are varying "standards", and opinions, for how bright a picture should be, but going through these sorts of calculations may help give a better idea of what one wants.

I assumed that my G1000 was at 750 (with a new bulb after calibration).

It's definately less now at 800+ hours on the bulb, but I have to say

the image looked pretty darn good! (This was without a ISCO or Panamorph).

I've a Panamorph on order. I've got to decide on the exact drop on the

screen before I order it. I'll be getting a Grayhawk thats 96" wide.

You also have to remember that Don is coming up with a slightly higher gain version of the Grayhawk screen, with a half gain point of 54 degrees. (That's straight from Don, in another thread) He says it will be used for perforated screen use, or something along those lines. It might be perfect for the lower output DILA's.
