help with 1080i upconversion

My plan is in a couple months to get the JVC 48" from best buy where I work for a huge discount. The question is that the tv upconverts everything including 720p to 1080i. I'm thinking of getting the new samsung dvd player that upconverts. Is this pointless as the tv does it already? Also does it matter if i use a progessive scan dvd player at all since i guess the tv doesn't display progressive scan in anything? Is this all right? Let me know guys!
