My neighbor has installed a new theater in his basement. He ended up with a Denon 3808, but we are having some trouble identifying why the reciever will not send a signal to the sub with some material. For example, watching a high def channel with surround sound give us bass, but watching a channel with stereo does not. Putting a game in the Xbox gives us bass, but playing a CD through the Xbox does not.

It is almost like the sub output is off if we are not playing surround material. Any stereo material including radio shuts off the signal to the sub.

It is not the sub. The same thing happens with another sub he owns. It must be a setting. We have read the manual. The sub is set to "on" for all sources as far as we can tell.

Any thoughts?

See page 28 of the manual: "Select LFE+Main if you want the bass signals to always be produced from the subwoofer."

What he said^^^^^

We tried that. I will check it again though. Thanks.

The only other tidbit I found was that all speakers should be set to "small" to get the sub signal highest. I am not certain what our setting is for that and will have to check.

It is not as though the sub is playing softly, but rather not at all. No detectable signal period. I suppose I could try to put a multimeter on the connector to verify.

Or set the front speakers to SMALL.

Right. What speakers? Did you use Audyssey to setup the system?

Set the speakers to small, if Audyssey was used, go to setup and reconfigure the LFE and sub CHANNEL settings. Like was said by siv...

Originally Audyssey was used. However, we manipulated so many settings trying to solve the problem that we were losing the sub signal on high def content as well.

We scrammed the cpu to get back to default settings. The problem still exists on 2 channel content, but the sub works fine again with HD stuff. We will need to redo the Audyssey at this point.

I have experience with home theater, but frankly have not used a receiver with such an extensive amount of settings. It really is quite dizzying...

note that there is a SEPARATE setup menu for 2CH content.

it's found under: MANUAL SETUP > AUDIO SETUP > 2CH DIRECT/STEREO

you can have different bass management settings for 2CH modes vs surround modes.

Please refer to the Audio section of my FAQ as I have a pretty thorough explanation of how these menus will behave wrt STEREO vs DIRECT modes, it can be a little confusing until you understand the Denon system:
