hey guys,

a friend's birthday is coming up and we were thinking about getting him a nice receiver. currently, he has a 5.1 martin logan surround sound system, and he purchased 2 additional martin logan in-ceiling speakers. we don't have much knowledge on "dual zone" technology and was wondering if u guys could recommend something nice. would under $1000 get us something of nice quality? thanks in advance.

Wow. Nice friends to be sure. However, Martin Logan speakers are generally 4-ohm speakers so are much harder to drive than 8-ohm speakers so you would need an AVR that can drive 4-ohm speakers easily. This would include generally only the mid level and higher models and even those models may require an external amp if the listening volume is very loud. The Denon 4311CI would be a good choice for a couple hundred over your budget when purchased from one of the on line authorized resellers (eg. AV Science or Electronics Expo), but you have to "call" them to get the lowest price.
