I've been killing the search bar and my eyes and brain at the same time trying to figure this stuff out. I'm not an electronic guru and a lot of this is going over my head in a hurry.

Basically I'm looking for a HTIB, not necessarily requiring a dvd player with it as 90% seem to have upconverters and I'd rather get Blu-Ray to add later.

Two I have my eyes on due to price and living situations are:

What I want to do is run a dvd or HD dvd, xbox and wii through the system. I also want to be able to run the tv through the 5.1 when watching hdtv.

I guess my question is what system would work?

Also, do you need an HDMI output on the reciever in order to watch hdtv in 5.1 or just a digital?

I know this stuff has been covered, I just can't seem to uncover the right rocks when searching to find the answers.

Thanks for any replies, I'm off to bed to recharge my brain cells after all of this.

I might urge you consider something else. Both the Sony and Pioneer you linked are made to look like higher end receivers from the front but lack any kind of connectivity or upgradeability in back. You already have plenty of things to plug into a receiver and it sounds like you might get more.

First though, you don't really need HDMI - it's nice but you don't need it. To watch HDTV in 5.1 you need at least a digital output from your cable box or TV and a digital input on your receiver. You can use an optical or coaxial cable for the connection.

At the price you're looking at, you won't be able to pass audio over HDMI anyway so it's best to get something with enough digital inputs to handle all of your equipment. The other things to consider is a receiver that at least has a subwoofer pre-out in case you want to upgrade your speakers later, and enough component and composite inputs for all the odd connections you do have.

Consider a refurbished Onkyo HTiB for your price range. They come with a one year warranty instead of two for a new unit and people here report that they receive them in good condition (do a search). My opinion is that electronics are reliable and these things don't have moving parts so there isn't much to go wrong. If you don't find a problem with a receiver or speaker right away, the chances are good that you won't have any problems for a long time - but that just my opinion.

Anyway, a few good options in your price range. Accessories4less is an authorized Onkyo seller:
Onkyo HT-S4100 silver ($200+ship)
Onkyo HT-S4100 black ($250+ship)
Onkyo HT-SR800 ($300+ship) - last year model but available at a nice price
Onkyo HT-S5100 ($330+ship)

Well you have one more option to get your HTIB. Its in your budget and more reliable. Its Samsung - HTZ310. Cost is nearly $ 220.

You can see full specifications and able to buy online. Just visit:-

I don't recommend the Samsung HT-Z310 and just returned it myself. Very few inputs, not a dedicated receiver, very poor speaker quality, etc.

I recommend getting the Sony HT-7200DH from B+H Photo Video for $385, as it has better speakers, a receiver capable of playing HD audio, and many inputs in the receiver.
