Gurus, I need your help!!!

I'm trying to play some wmv clips in 720p or even resize DVD to 720p, but I cant get a smooth playback of both video and audio.

My HTPC is a Pentium 2.4Mhz, 256MB, NVidia FX5700 128MB card, Yamaha SPDIF sound card, and that's the software I'm using:

- Zoomplayer

- Re-clock

- Fddshow (used for DVDs only)

- Cineplayer (used for DVDs only)

(sorry I don't have the versions, but I downloaded the last versions 2 months ago)

I'm concentrating in the media playback (avi, wmf, etc), not DVD.

When I have Zoomplayer set up to use VRM9, the video playback of 720p media is not smooth, and the CPU usage goes way up high (memory usage seems to be fine, though)! The playback of 480p is ok.

When I use Overlay Mixer instead the playback of 720p is good, but the picture quality suffers.

For 1080p, I can't find a way to playback video and audio smoothly. Video playback is good but my audio keeps halting several times.

I have Reclock setup as the audio filter and it's running ok with all default options.

I thought I had enough machine to run 720p streams???!

I don't have much idea of what to do next, then I tried several refresh rates such as 60Hz, 70Hz, 75Hz, with the same result. Right now, I'm set up in 75Hz.

Do you guys have an idea of what settings, new software or hardware I can get to play 720p media or resize to 720p based on my system.

I'm trying to find the cheaper route.

Thanks!!

Are you using FFDShow for resizing to 720p? If this is the case, then you don't have the processing power to do this. You can try putting a filter in front of the resize (levels set at 1), gradual denoise before resize, overclock, or buy a faster chip. VMR9 takes more CPU than overlay. 1080p takes top of the line equipment to do with FFDShow.

What kind of Ram are you using? For 720p playback you want to run PC2700 DDR Ram or faster. It's also recommended that you run 384 MB or more.

As it is, your system is barely able to handle 720p and I would not recommend trying to run 1080p.

Minimum Configuration

(Play 720p video)

Microsoft Windows XP

Windows Media Player 9 Series

2.4 GHz processor

384 MB of RAM

64 MB video card

1024 x 768 screen resolution

16-bit sound card

Speakers

Optimum Configuration

(Play 1080p video with 5.1 surround sound)

Microsoft Windows XP

Windows Media Player 9 Series

DirectX 9.0

3.0 GHz processor

512 MB of RAM

128 MB video card

1920 x 1440 screen resolution

24-bit 96 kHz multichannel sound card

5.1 surround sound speaker system

My memory is PC2100.

I kind of felt that my system was struggling to run 720p.

maybe if I try overclocking or if I buy 512MB of PC2700 memory.

I'm wondering if there is any other software than can run VRM9 or scaling using less CPU than fddshow / zoomplayer.

who knows

???

You should not be getting a high CPU hit when using VMR9 mode, I get maybe 5% or less, nothing like what you are describing. You should make sure you have the latest official nvidia drivers installed as they fixed various VMR9 issues. Don't mess with beta drivers.

Sometimes you have too. :) The currently official NVIDIA 56.72 drivers do not support 1280x720 res via DVI on some projectors ( bluescreens ) whereas the beta 60.85 and 61.12 drivers work pretty fine so far.

It´s worth a try I guess. :)
