Help with JBL 4612 (or 2404) Horns

626 Views 2 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  nrkorsakov
Hi!

I'm a musician and am very new to speakers and design, so please forgive my ignorance!

I just bought a pair of JBL 4612 speakers that work but are kind of trashed.

I was going to paint them.

I know enough to be able to unscrew the two woofers so they don't get damaged, but what about the horn?

If I want to paint the cabinets and also the (please excuse but they are evidently referred to as "baby-b_tt cheeks) horns, how do I remove the (driver?) from the metal horn so it doesn't get damaged when I spray-paint.

Also, I'm guessing the metal part of the horn can actually be painted without damaging it?

Many thanks!

Based on the pics I could find, the horns have 4 screws holding them? Unscrewing those should allow removal, and the CD (? I'm assuming?) should either be screw-on or bolt mounted. Pics from yours would help.

Whatever paint you decide to use (I would recommend a good rattle-can based on the pics I found) go with multiple, very light coats.

Be sure to evaluate the entire box, front to back, and make sure there are no weak joints, etc. as those would be the bigger problem.

Hey thank you so much!

I'm going to crack them open today and see what I am facing.

I got some Krylon rattle-can yesterday, and am going to practice using them before I attempt the real deal.

Also the tip on the cabinet joints. I had not thought of it.

Many thanks again for you kind help!
