Help with my setup (Speakercraft)

Hi guys,

I’m looking for some help with my current setup (in-wall).

Room Size: 15' W x 26'11" L x 9' H (Sealed)

Speakers:

FRONTS - SpeakerCraft PROFILE AIM CINEMA FIVE x 3

REAR and BACK surrounds- SpeakerCraft PROFILE AIM LCR5 FIVE x 4

HEIGHTS (to be installed): Klipsch CDT-5800-C II x 4

SUBWOOFERS- SpeakerCraft PROFILE CINEMA SUB 10 x 2
Subwoofer AMP: Speakercraft Bass Power 250 x 1

Receiver: Marantz SR6013
2-Chan Amp: Anthem MCA20
Blu-Ray Player: Sony UBP-X700

My issue is with the subwoofer performance. Either it’s not calibrated correctly, underpowered (when it was installed, they used a single amp for two woofers) or its just beyond the capabilities of the subwoofer.

The mid to highs sounds perfectly fine and pack a punch. It’s the lows where I feel there’s something missing. Forgive me for not being the most knowledgeable when it comes to subwoofers, but my previous subwoofers (from my old place) were DefTech Supercube References x 2. Now those had a serious rumble that would rattle your brain.

I used the following Blu Rays to demo the system (Saving Private Ryan, Black Hawk Down, Overlord, The Matrix, Need for Speed etc). There definitely seems to be something off.

I’m wondering if it’s some settings I need to tinker with, add an extra amp, or maybe add an additional powered sub?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Well, just look at the specs. The Speakercraft is 10” powered by 250 watts. The Def Tech is 14” powered by 1800 watts. On top of that, an in-wall sub is seldom installed in the location for best performance.

The SpeakerCraft PROFILE CINEMA SUB 10 is a 10" driver with NO ENCLOSURE mounted in drywall. Since 1/2" drywall is fairly porous at low frequencies, there is likely some cancellation of the sound down low. The sub is spec'd to 30 Hz but with no specified -3 dB point. There is no way to know what you're actually getting in your room without in-room measurements, but I would bet there is no usable output below about 45 to 50 Hz. You could build non-porous backer boxes for them to improve their output/extension.

How are the 2 subs connected to the power amp? The drivers are 4 ohms, and there is only one subwoofer output, so they could be a real drain on the power amp if they're hooked up incorrectly. Wiring them in series will raise the impedance to 8 Ohms instead of wiring in parallel which reduces the impedance to 2 Ohms.

Another thing you can check is the splice between the subs and the speakers at the crossover point. With dual subs, the standard Distance setting may not always apply. To check this you would need to be able to measure the response while adjusting the receiver's subwoofer Distance setting.

Hi Craig,

Thank you so much for all that info, I sincerely I appreciate the help. Forgive me for not being the most knowledgeable, but to answer your questions:

The subwoofers were wired in parallel, meaning 2 ohms resistance. Both in-wall subs have backboxes (https://www.speakercraft.com/product/accutune-box-10-back-box-ASM67102)

However, you mention that the lower frequencies are probably never being realized. That would explain the “difference” being experienced.

Given that the SR6013 has two Subwoofer outputs (one being used), would adding a third powered subwoofer help? In particular, If I was able to get a powered supercube (use the wireless kit), would that help the lows?
