Help with Panny WD7UY (and DTiVo settings)

I just got a WD7UY. The PQ is great when the entire scene is bright, but there are several issues I haven't noticed before:

General Problems:

1) There is a fog / gradation effect in many scenes. Mostly with the dark colors. Example, sometimes black hair has some green or purlple squares in it. Is this normal with a DVD? I only have a PS2 as my DVD player... but I thought the gradation was caused by compressing which should be much less on the DVD.

2) My HK AV300 receiver is acting as a video switcher. When there is no source signal, it displays a blue screen. On the plasma I see faint vertical darker stripes about 1/2 " a part when this "solid" blue screen is displayed? The stripes are in the center half of the screen only in any display mode, the edges seem pure solid blue. What causes this?

DTiVo Problems -

1) With DTiVo - There are horizontal bands I'm seeing with bright objects in dark scenes or vice-versa. Any time there is high contrast differences. For example... the ending titles in a movie, I see a darker band running next to white text that is being scrolled up the screen. Or a bright car logo on a black screen will have a darker band running next to the logo across the screen I don't think this is plasma related because I see the problem very slightly on my other DTiVo which is connected to a CRT monitor. It is much more noticeable (to the point of being distracting) on the plasma. What causes this?!!

2) Does anyone have DTiVo and the WD7UY who would be willing to try to find matching scenes in a recording to see if we both see the same problems?

Thanks!

I don not have the same display as you (I have a 50PHD6UY) and you don't say which DTiVo you have. I have the HR10-250 HD DirecTiVo and have never seen any of the effects you describe. I really think your situation requires some investigation. Hopefully others will post more helpful ideas soon.
I have two of the Hughes HDVR2 DTiVos.

This afternoon I troubleshooted the problem a bit further. The DTiVo problems still stand with both the plasma and CRT monitors, but the general plasma problems seem to be plasma related. I tried some more DVD signal from my PS2 and there is some definite noise coming in from the top and bottom of the screen into the black letter box bars. I even tried RCA cables from a portable DVD player and still saw the problem. I think I have a contrast problem with the plasma. Will start another thread about that.

Still hoping someone can help me with the DTiVo issues. Maybe the Hughes electronics cause the problem with the video output causing the banding? Seems strange I have two separate units that both have the same problem (compounded by the possible plasma problem).

Any input would be appreciated!

The PS/2 is a seriously lousy DVD player. This is most likely the source, either the player or the DVD title.

I've seen some titles that were poorly converted to DVD that exhibit these kinds of posterization effects - even on a very good player and display.

I've got last year's 50HD6UY and a HD Tivo on it. Some artifacting is normal on D*, but it sounds like there's something else potentially wrong in your system, perhaps in the display itself, or in something else in the signal chain.

Thanks for your feedback.

I used Pirates of the Carribean as the test DVD. I know the PS/2 is a lousy player, but that's all I got to test with. I was hoping someone else had Pirates and could test it on their system to see if it's the DVD or the plasma.

I also tested with a portable DVD player through an RCA conncector and still saw the problem. So that eliminates the player as the problem, but not the DVD.

I do think there is something messed up with my display with the amount of banding and ghosting I'm seeing with bright / dark objects. Trying to find a more definitive way to test this.

Thanks for your input,
