Help with smaller sized sub in a huge room?

1344 Views 13 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Jonomega
my wife will not let me have the SVS PB12-Plus/2. Is there any sub out there that will fill this room nicely. 12' ceilings 19' wide 35' long hardwood floors

paadigm cinema 330s fronts and center paradigm in ceilings for te rears. I need something that will fill the room with a lot of base in a smaller cabinet.

If size of the enclosure is an issue, you are going to pay some $$$$ to get similar output of the Plus/2. The JL Fathom F113 has excellent output in small enclosure, but retails for over $3000. The Axiom EP500 is another excellent subwoofer with a small footprint, but will not have the output of the Plus/2.

It would help if we knew a budget.

Get a new wife.

Unfortunately, just about anything that has that level of ouput is either large or expensive or both.

Just buy the damn thing, it's too heavy for her to move anyway. :)

Then cancel the credit cards, so she can't retaliate. :)
It is always better to ask for forgiveness rather than permission.

Would the svs be the best sub for my application under my budget

Hmm that's sound pretty big compare to my space, why not try some of those in wall subs.If it's a decor problem..Or I can't believe I am saying this, a DIYfer?

There are folks here that would be more than happy to guid you toward the right direction.

Or get a JL F112 or F110 once they are available

Axiom EP500 will be a big winner in the small category. I've got a PB13 on preorder and just built a mock sub dimension wise with foam poster board and the sub is huge. Still trying to decide if that will work or not. If it doesn't it will be the EP500.

Is the DIY route an option for you? You could try an infinite baffle type sub. Strong, clean, loud and low bass, and no enclosure at all (well, an adjoining room/attic/etc. is the enclosure). Not an option for everyone though.
The PB12+/2 is easily an end table. You don't know how big until you build a model of it to fill that space.

Sorry, at a tick under 8000 cubic feet, there are VERY few single subs that will even remotely come close to filling that space and giving you a "lot of bass in a small cabinet". Most folks have spaces half that size or less and don't realize what happens when you get up into that volume range or larger. Your output requirements just to meet reference level at the seat and give you any sort of headroom at all are vastly greater than in a 3Kft3 space. You need a sub capable of at least 120 db of output and this narrows the playing field quite drastically. The single subs that *will* fill that space are either:

A) Very large...ala Danley Labs DTS-20, or...

B) Bloody Expensive (Gotham).

You need horsepower...sheer unadulterated horsepower. I have a room just a bit larger and highly treated acoustically. I use a Danley DTS-20 (definitely low on the WAF, though it is surprisingly easy to hide). I am adding three additional midbass subs to get more impact, one for each screen channel. I am also going to add a second LFE sub. Either a second DTS-20 or I may try a Bag End Bassault (hint...4 of the Bassault subs fill Madison Square Garden so they are sheer utter excessive complete overkill
) I've tried a number of smaller single subs (yes, including the F-113) and they all hit the stops.

DIY is definitely a route to consider as you can build something in (IB up in an attic/adjacent room is a possibility). Barring that, multiple lesser expensive subs such as two the the Elemental Designs A5-300 (get them unfinished and veneer them), or two of the Hsu Labs VTF-3's will come close.

I've cleaned up this thread.

All parties involved will be suspended if this sort of thing continues.

The only thing i can think of that you can do with that budget is to bolt some buttkickers to the bottoms of your sofa's, buy a HSU MBM woofer for very close range bass up to 120hz ( i think your 330s go to 110hz anyways, so you need a crossover of at minimum 120hz).

The MBM would only get you down to about 40hz, so you'd have to have another subwoofer (perhaps a smaller hsu due to potential for package deal on the subs) close by as well.

mBM12 + VTF2-mk3 gets you to 1000$. With both close range, you might be able to get the bass results you want. If your wife doesnt agree, Im not sure what else to say as she might not agree to the buttkicker idea either!
