I just got a samsung pn58b860 and pioneer vsx-23txh with an oppo bdp-83 on the way. I've been waiting on getting speakers because I'm not sure where the surrounds will go. Any suggestions would be appreciated.


The full room is 24'x22' with the solid support column in the center. the tv and couch are on one half of the room, with the couch in the middle of the space. the viewing location is about 10' from the tv. Here's some crappy diagrams.

I don't really want to stick the surrounds on pedestals behind the couch as that space is frequently trafficked on the way to the desk and exercise equipment, plus i've got a toddler at home who loves to pull things down. Are in-ceiling surrounds the only "good" option here? Or would i wallmount or in-wall the speakers in the back corners, even though they'd be almost 10' behind the couch?

I would probably get bipole/dipole type surrounds and wall mount them to either side, one on the wall (left) and one on the post (right). That's what I would do....


in-ceiling surrounds are definitely a viable option though...

Agreed. I would recommend dipole speakers as a good fix for this arrangement.


It actually wouldn't be too bad if you have the dipole speaker right inline with your head on the couch.


Do you have any ideas on speakers/budget at this point?


The Paradigm Cinema 90 comes with Dipole surround speakers, and its only $850. I love mine

Given your size of TV I would move the sofa a bit closer to the TV and mount the surrounds as batpig suggested. This would place the surrounds a little behind you - desirable - and, personally, I think would be better for viewing as well. Not to mention give a little better access to the fitness center...


See one of the many references for speaker placement for ideal angle from the seating position for the rear speakers.

Have you considered wall or ceiling speakers? I have an odd shaped room and I was considering ceiling speakers for when I do the 7.1 upgrade.
