My brother has enlisted me to do some research on a flat panel/plasma tv. I have numerous questions so I was hoping to get some help from the experienced forum members.


Not sure what the difference is in plasma and LCD. So there is no preference, per say, on his behalf.


1. In general, what is the best "bang for the buck" in 42" (or slightly larger) that is sold @ Best Buy/Circuit City?

2. A few years ago my parents had a loaner tv while there 60" was being prepared. I belive it was a 46" widescreen but now 100%. Movies looked OK on it but I remember seeing the local news on it when I stopped by and do to the widescreen all the people looked short and fat. You could make everything proportioned but then you lost a few inches off each side. Did that make sense?

Is that still an issue with current tv's?


3. His den is set up like mine so I am trying to provide a link of my setup.

As you see the "cubby hole" is where the tv will sit. I doubt the cubby hole is big enough for the tv to fit all the way in.

Would it be OK for the front portion of the tv to sit on the ledge? Any other mounting options that he should consider?

things needed for a recommendation:


1)Seating distance from the TV?


2)What are the dimensions of the "cubby hole"?

Width is the most important and probably only factor regarding size. (I'm sure depth won't be a problem)

You will want at least 41" in width to fit a 42" plasma or LCD.

Give or take a few centimeters.


3)Budget??

SInce this is my brothers house and it's nearing completion I have asked him to get me those particular dimensions/distances.


I'll also ask him about budget but I would think he would want to stay around 2500 - 3000.

OK, I'm back with a little more info. The width of the hole is 42.5", height is ~28.75", and depth is 25".

With that said, the total height he gave me was including a small section that is for a DVD player/cable box/etc.

Also he wants to try and keep it closer to $2000 -2500 if possible.


Seating distance would be 10 - 15 ft.


So, with all of that does anyone have any good recommendations?
