I have an external USB drive (Maxtor 250GB in a generic USB2.0 enclosure).

My problem now is that it FREQUENTLY disconnects and reconnects!

Has anyone seen this? It's really frustrating because I can't record or play back anything to or from it.

I'm using XP Pro on ASUS P4PE MB BIOS 1007.

Thanks!

Do you have any other devices connected to the bus? Maybe a webcam?

There was an issue with XP that involved a USB camera causing other devices to perform poorly or disconnect.

Do you have SP1 and the rest of Microsoft's patches?

Yeah, i've got some other stuff connected via USB like a 3com web camera, HP printer, Nomad MP3 and Sony DVDRW external drive.

They are all connected to different host controllers on my motherboard though.

It doesn't seem to be happening now that I've switched USB cables with my DVD writer though. It did complain that my storage device was a high speed USB device plugged into a non-high speed port though.

But I'm pretty sure all of the controllers on my ASUS P4PE are USB2.0 aren't they? The DVD writer and external Maxtor HD are plugged directly into the two USB ports next to the keyboard/mouse ps/2 ports.
