I just preordered the new Viliv X70 from dynamism.com http://www.dynamism.com/#Product=viliv_x70 . This is a sexy looking MID with a 7" touchscreen. I was wondering if there is software out there to use this as a secondary display to control my media center system for things such as browsing my music library, recording programs off my epg etc. I think I saw an implemetation of something like this in the top of the line okoro media systems(OMS Touch Screen ). http://www.okoromedia.com/model.asp?model=GX100#pcf Any ideas on how to implement this will be welcome

NetRemote runs on most Pocket PC 2002 and 2003 devices using the Microsoft Windows Mobile OS and Regular Windows machines (Including 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, Windows 7). This includes popular handheld devices such as the HP iPaq and Dell Axim lines.

I've also used TightVNC to control my HTPC using netbooks and laptops. Works well for PC maintenance and queueing music on Winamp. Don't think it'll be suitable for controlling Windows Media Center, though (slow refresh rates).

You've got laptops and netbooks. Why don't you try it using those? You don't really need to wait until you get your Viliv X70 EX before testing.

Earliest shipment from Dynamism is on July 28 (if you're part of the first batch) and that's still a couple of weeks away. Add shipping time and you won't get it until August.

If you test with one of your netbooks now, then you'll know if the X70 will work or not. It's running Windows XP like most netbooks. Same screen resolution, too (1024x600). Whatever results you might have on the netbook would probably be similar to the results on the X70. If it doesn't work initially, you might even be able to find a fix before it arrives on your doorstep.

If it costs, at most, half its current price, maybe. Even at $300 (lowest configuration w/16GB SSD is $599), that's one expensive remote that few people would consider. You can build a basic HD HTPC for the same price. I think a good compromise might be something like the iPod Touch (refurbs are pretty cheap) or the iPhone (a lot of people already own them). Now if only there were better remote control software available.

That said, I hear you about the "being a gadget freak" thing. In my defense though, I'm getting one since I would feel much more comfortable lugging around the well-built Viliv X70 compared to a much more expensive Fujitsu P1620. From chats, JKK has mentioned he's dropped his review model several times already and it's still going strong. The Fujitsu is also a bit heavy (~1kg) for single-handed operation. I'm hoping the Viliv (~600g) would be less of a strain on the wrist for manga reading.

So no one sees the potential 4 these devices and media center. People r willing to pay a premuim for cases wit screens with very little practical use. Now if there was a way to clone and use these devices as secondary monitors with its touch capapilty it wil b the ultimate media center remote

I've been looking for a good solution similar to this for some time, but I want a program that is more generic then the stuff I've found. I don't care about cloning the screen on the HTPC, altough I can see that this is something people who listen to music on their HTPCs want.

What I would really like is the following:

Let's say you have one of these MIDs (or netbook/laptop/tablet). On that MID you have a program.

- When you start the program the first thing you get is a list of computers you have added.

- After you have chosen what computer you want to connect to you get a remote program where you can choose from two UIs. One that has a on-screen keyboard, and one that has remotebuttons as well as basic shortcuts for movies, TV, music etc.

Communication can either go over Bluetooth or WiFi

To build on this furter one could create a plugin that can clone the HTPC-screen aswell, but I don't think the technology is quite there yet.
