Due to me getting laid off for a month because of the recent weather, I sat around for a week, went stir crazy and out of the blue it popped in my head that I should begin finishing my basement. So I measured everything out and bought a bunch of lumber. I thought I knew what I wanted until I searched for bar ideas and this forum came up and I began to read about home theaters. Now it seems there is no other way to go that makes sense.


Looking at my basement, there is now going to be a home theatre where a big storage area was on my first set of plans.


Overall, the basement is a 2000 SF walkout and will finish about 1500. There will be a theater, bar, pool table area, living room, bath, and a bedroom.


Theater dimensions aren't really ideal, but here they are.

11'8" wide x 25' long by 8'10" high. No windows. I am planning on a row of three seats with a bar height counter behind with 4 bar chairs. When it comes to screen size, type of screen, seating, distances, I would really appreciate advice from you guys.

Here is the theatre almost framed up. Just have to go around the darn geothermal lines on the right top side of it. Not sure if I will end up building soffits down each side or just put a tiny bump out there. There will also be some sort of stage built as well.

Everything really went smoothly in my first couple weeks. Granted I was laid off and am back to working again and will certainly slow down. I got 10 HVAC runs put in the ceiling and 3 returns for them, almost everything framed up, the tub installed and plumbing rough-in complete for wet bar sink, bath sink, and toilet.


The main thing to finish for framing is the soffit around the main beam going the length of living area. It will be a much larger one than anything else I've seen on here, but it will be about 2 feet wide. Much of the plumbing and electrical run parallel next to the beam, so I designed the soffit to hold acoustical tiles that will rest up inside its framework that can be pulled out at anytime and will be held up by 1x6 trim. There will be enough room to slide the panels over and can then fall out.

A view of the bar area. I built a soffit to match up with the counter edges below the other soffit that had to be there and will trim it out. Planning on an all wood ceiling and surround around it.

Another pic of the bar. Decided to make my own cabinetry. They are done except for make the face framed and doors. I made 2' deep cabinet on the wall where a small fridge will be. The bar itself has an 18" top and made a 12" cabinet behind it.

Obviously the bathroom and a closet to the right under the stairs.

I am getting ready to run electrical and this is where I need some advice on what wires I need to run for the theater area. I have no AV equipment experience and am trying to learn from reading all of your threads.


My list so far from rack to the projector is


2 HDMI

1 VGA

2 cat6

component/stereo

power (does it need to be a dedicated circuit)


For the speakers, I have seen some run power to them. Is this needed or is just speaker wire OK. Just at HD and they had 14/2 speaker wire for in wall framing and wondering if that is good enough.


Subs will get power and a RG6.


I was planning on getting the Epson 8100 projector but not sure on receiver and speakers/sub. My planned budget for equipment is around the $5000 mark and am very open to suggestions out there for this range.
