Wow! Not to far off now. I second the vote for Fight Club, what a great flick, and one of the better soundtracks (which should be improved in d-vhs) to boot. Curious to see whether these movies will be available exclusively at these sites only.

They need to do Moulin Rouge. That movie needs every bit of detail it can get. It's major eye candy.

I wonder what Widescreen Review will be charging if retail is $34.98. Hopefully they will discount it to $25-$30 at least.

Gimme!!

Will a D-Theater tape play in a Panasonic PV-HD1000 D-VHS recorder? If not, are there plans to produce pre-recorded D-VHS tapes that are compatible with the Panasonic recorder?

No, the only place D-Theater tapes will play is in D-Theater decks. And no, existing D-VHS decks are not upgradeable to D-Theater; as of right now, there is only one model D-Theater on the market, and I haven't seen anyone stepping up to the plate besides the incumbent JVC.

Mark Cuban was quoted recently as saying that he would be producing non-D-Theater D-VHS tapes (likely documentaries, sports, B movies, etc., is my guess). No details on titles, timelines or pricing that I have seen. Rest assured, though, that most--if not all--A list Hollywood releases will be D-Theater only.

I bet they won't as long as they have a monopoly on those tapes.

I just sent this message to our moderator, Alan Gouge. Please let him know if you agree:

"Alan,

Now that pre-recorded D-VHS tapes are becoming a reality, there is a need to have a separate forum for this topic. Discussion to date has taken place in the HDTV Recorders and HDTV Programming Forums, which are not a good fit IMO.

Please consider establishing a new Forum. You may want to make it more general; e.g., "Pre-recorded HDTV" vice just D-Theater. That way, the same forum can be used when HD DVD comes along."

Thanks for your support.

The Widescreen Review D-Theater site now has a detailed review of the D-Theater T2. They called the sound "reference quality" and "system challenging in the low end" for explosions and other special effects. They were a little less enthusiastic regarding the picture.

This WSR site also now has a detailed review of House of Yes.

Sorry. The site is for WSR subscribers only.

That T2 review kind of bums me out.. I wanted the review of the video quality to be better than that.. Oh well. Hopefully fight club and xmen will make up for it..

Well, the article is copyrighted by WSR, so we can't just copy and paste it here ;)

Basically they say image quality is much better than DVD but has the same soft characteristc. Deeper blacks and overall color fidelity is greatly improved compared to the DVD. Noise and artifacts are still visible, but nowhere near DVD.

I think they liked it, but didn't want to rate it too high because they believe that better tapes are yet to come... so we hope all.

Sound is exceptional, but the DTS version of the DVD seemed to be a bit better in the low end. As the D-VHS tape runs DD at 576 kbps, the sound exhibits more detail and resolution in the midrange, they say. They also make us of the Center surround channel in the EX mix...
