If so, what budget range would I be looking at. I am thinking I can get away without 1, but want opinions from those with experience.

Mobo:

GPU:

(from AMD's website)

Integrated HD audio controller

* Output protected high bit rate 7.1 channel surround sound over HDMI with no additional cables required

* Supports AC-3, AAC, Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio formats

Speakers:

Brand new Boston Acoustic Classic's in stereo with HSU VF3-MK3

I currently have the HDMI from my GPU going to my Denon591 for video and sound (mostly just iTunes tho). Is there a way to get higher quality sound from this set up or am I maxed out? I built the computer for gaming first, then got into home theater.

If you are bitstreaming via HDMI, (as when using blu-ray), there is supposed to be a protected stream, and it's digital, so passing that content from your computer to your receiver via HDMI is the best you can do, assuming you want your receiver to process the audio. I guess you could have your computer process the audio, but I don't think a sound card would help in that department. I would not recommend a soundcard for your set up under any circumstance that I can conceive.

Im assuming you have a decent receiver...?

If so, then no, a sound card will do nothing your video card can't do already.

As long as you have a newer receiver, the bitstreamed HD audio from your HDMI output is as good as it gets.
