Just received "Letters from Iwo Jima" yesterday and went to play it today and got the dreaded "this disc is not dvd format". Washed it in warm soapy water and it still fails. I had also received the Toshiba 1.5 update for my A2 yesterday. Actually for some odd reason Toshiba sent me 3 discs for the 1.5 update.
I applied the update before trying to play Letters. After Letters wouldn't play I tried several other combo discs that people have had problems with, such as Hollywoodland, and they played fine. Has anybody else had a problem with Letters?

I just downloaded firmware 1.6 the other day and now my combo HD DVDs seem to be loading properly. Do you use an ethernet connection?
I watched Iwo on my Xbox360 and I did notice a long pause before it began to play. I thought maybe I got a fingerprint on the surface, but after waiting a little while, it began to play. Most definitely had me worried. My 1st rental of March of the Penguins wouldn't play, but the 2nd worked.

I couldn't play any combos before the 1.6 update. Unfortunately, I didn't try Letters before the update. It works after the update though. Not sure if that helps you or not. Good luck.
Thanks to all. You've helped me decide whether or not to return the disc to Amazon. I think I'll wait for the 1.6 update disc. Sounds like the combo disc problem will finally be fixed.
You know Toshiba have made the ISO's avail. online....

I saw this in another thread... maybe you can get to watching that movie quicker than you thought.
Thanks for the link. It's still at version 1.5, but hopefully they'll update it soon. I may even get brave and run some cat 5 from my router to the player, about 25'. I'm a little nervous doing it that way, since there's more of a chance to mess up.

There's very little chance it'll mess up and brick your player. When people have problems, the update simply doesn't run. It might timeout for no good reason at step 34/35/36 but the worst thing in that scenario is you have to unplug the unit to reboot.

Losing power while it runs through update steps 1-5 would probably brick the player. But that could occur just as easily via an ISO update as over Ethernet.

Have you ever considered getting the Bluray version when both are available? I support both formats but HD DVD is always a gamble - whereas I've never had a playback issue with Blu-ray.

Have you "considered" checking out the problems with some Blu ray discs in the BD forum??

And... more FUD.

Pirates is having issues.... Big whoop. It'll be fixed. Nearly all issues are due to people not updating firmware.

If you've seen the menu you'll know it's pretty cool when it works.

Honestly... It's not. Having watched over 50 titles on each format, the HD DVD Discs are much more troublesome. Even when you keep you firmware up to date, which I do at all times.

Let's be honest, Universal is actually replacing some of their combo discs because of manufaturing errors.

Just so you know, I have the Toshiba HD-XA1 (Updated to 2.2) and Samsung BD-P1000 (Most recent update). I've had to update the HD unit three time more than the Blu-ray player.

actually,:

1. The PS3 plays flawlessly or near to it

2. The "problems" you mention were fixed by simply downloading the latest firmware. They were probably caused by Disney using BD-J authoring, but again, the fix was simply keeping up to date.

I have yet to need to WASH my bd discs or even clean them (well, i had to wipe Dinosaur once with tissue, probably had my fingerprints on them).

It's very obvious recently that the quality of the PS3 is significantly better than anything on the HD-DVD side.

I've played about 40 HD-DVDs on the lowest end player (XBox add on) and have not had one problem. Many of these discs were combos and many have been purchased used.

I bought five Blu-Ray discs for my parents and had to return three because they wouldn't play (Casino Royale, Crank, and Flyboys) on their $900 player. My parents are ordinary consumers (not AV inclined), bought a Blu-Ray player on a whim, and now dislike it and seldom use it.

For me, I'm completely satisfied with HD-DVD and have no intention of buying a Blu-Ray player.

Anyway, to the OP, I played Letters from Iwo Jima perfectly last night in the XBox add on. The initial loading time was a little longer than usual, but I had no problems with the film itself.
2.2 on G1 plays the disc fine. Id like to add that I own 75 HD DVD and have rented 7 and have never had a single playback issue.

After having plenty of issues (error codes) with the UNIVERSAL titles I am starting to consider getting Blu ray discs when they are offered on both formats. Call it whatever you want but I do NOT like having guests over only to have the movie freeze up and display error code!

How is it "fuddness" when he is simply setting forth his own personal experience?
