Is there any reason at all to have analog audio connections hooked up at the same time as a digital connection?

For example: To have my dvd player or xbox hooked up with Optical and L+R Analog at the same time to my receiver.

Just curious... because that's two cables I can eliminate from my current mess of cables. :)

not sure why you would plug in both at the same time... i would say no, you wouldn't have any reason to do this. but i'm not an expert and would like to see what the experts have to say on this :)

on a similar note, i've read somewhere that if you plug in both coax digital and optical the optical takes priority over the coax? is this right? sorry to steal your thread!

Absolutely! If you send any source to a second zone you'll HAVE to connect via analog. Also, it lets you switch from analog to digital on the fly so you can best determine for yourself which sounds better in 2ch. mode.

Phatfreeza, The two connections you mention are both digital. They cannot be used simultaneously because you'll have to set up the digital assignments in the receiver's setup menu. However, If both digital and analog inputs are used and the receiver is set to "auto detect" the receiver will usually detect the digital signal first. This is easy to override, though.

I am running xbox with XBMC with the advanced A/V pack and have both optical and RCA connections hooked up for the very reason that mborner described. I use the optical for the kids DVD movies for 5.1 and the RCA analog for the multi-room source for the house.

I hooked up both my digital and analog hookups from the satellite box. I connected them to two seperate video inputs on my reciever. It allows me to change to either depending on sound quality. I haven't had any issues. I've used this set up for a couple of years.
