I'll have to check that out!

I did some heavy searching and didn't find anything on this, but should we have a running thread of downloadable high-def sample material? I don't have ANY hdtv receiving capability, so what I can download is all I can use to experience relative high-def for now!

I second that! As a matter of fact, can anyone donate some web space so that files like this could be downloaded from one location? That's probably asking too much but, you never know.

i think there was some legal nonsense about doing that ... a long time ago someone did have 720p and 1080i clips up (of a bikini contest at that!), but they were taken down due to some legal crap ... btw i just downloaded a couple of the 720p clips from MS, and they play perfectly smooth on my 2.0 P4 overclocked to 2.5 at the moment (i sometimes turn it up more) but the quality is nothing special ... like it really doesn't look any better than DVD to me ... whats with that? does my screen resolution matter? i'm running 1280 x 960 @ 120 hz on a rad9700pro

Tomas, Thanks a lot for the links.

Can anyone compare the quality of the Confidence trailer to a good D-Theater tape?

Can someone PLEASE tell us where to get more trailers in HD?

I missed the Bad Boys2 and Xmen2 trailer that were posted at one time.

Oh, some bikin clips would be great too!

Was there ever an Episode 2 trailer release in highres?

All I have is:

T3 teaser

Matrix teaser

Matrix trailer

Nice TJ- Does MS have a page talking about the clips a little bit?

I watched those- Much better than the Liquid clip and no stuttering for me, even though they're a higher bitrate. Ran fine on my 1900+.

As for the quality of the clips, I'd have to say they're very good- Not quite ATSC good, but almost- sound is just OK- halfrate DTS whips its butt all over the place, and I doubt they'll even do higher bitrate sound, because then they'll never be able to fit it on 1/2 DVDs.

As a stopgap before true HD-DVD I'd say this is a good thing- only get HD-DVD out faster.

That Confidence Trailer is sweet! Blows the heck out of the largest quicktime version.

I wish Microsoft would encode all movie trailers in that format, but I doubt that will happen.

DaveFi,

I also found it weird that I could play the confidence clip much easier than the step into liquid clip.

As to the quality of the clips, I am still not certain that we can proclaim the WM9 method inferior in to ATSC when given 8 MB/s. The biggest indication of this is that the Foreign Affair clip was worse than the Confidence clip eventhough it was at a higher bit rate. The only way to tell the true power of WM9 would be to see the quality of the source clip. Another method would be to wait for the T2 WM9 version(It is supposed to be from a frame perfect source). If WM9 does not cut it then, one could then call it substandard to ATSC.

I would say the same thing concerning the audio quality. It would be the most prudent thing to wait.

Our WMA Pro is about 2 to 3 times more efficient than DTS. It also has far higher headroom, able to go all the way up to lossless with 8 channels of 96Khz/24-bit. Of coure, it is up to the content owner to decide on the data rate and the resolution of each channel as is the case with DTS. But at even low data rates of 384kbps or 440kpbs, you should see quality that rivals DTS at 720 to 1.4 Mbit/sec.

Note that for these trailers though, the emphasis is on video and not audio per-se. And for the sake of playability, some of the HD trailers are encoded in stereo, not WMA Pro multichannel.

As to details of the clips, they are all different. We have many encoding modes from CBR to VBR and 1- and 2-pass encoding. VBR clips tend to have very high peaks which hamper playability on some machines but give a more uniform quality (for long clips). This is the reason that VBR clips such as Liquid don't play on every machine.

Whoa!! Big brother is watching!! Never thought I'd see Microsoft on here. AVS is big time now. We will all see true quality next week, when the first dvd is released encoded in WM9.

Is it just me or is the step into liquid one of the poorer clips though ?? I dont know why but I see a fair bit of 'swarm' ing on a few of the scenes and yet this clip is also the only one to give my HTPC any issue in playback...

The confidence trailer looks better in pretty much every way to my eyes...

Something to do with the source or encode or ???

I am not trying to knock it... I LOVE that there is some content out there to play with... I have always maintained that some AD agency will be kicking themselves for not releasing HD adds and dropping them out to P2P etc... Where else will you get high spending tech lving demographics using thier own bandwidth to pull and watch adverts...

Sorry if this has been asked before, but do you need a multi-channel output card (i.e. Revo) to get surround sound from the upcoming WMP tracks for Standing in the Shadows of Motown and Terminator 2 Extreme?

It appears so... WMA Pro will not output as DD or DTS... AS no recivers have a WMA Pro decoder yet I dont think a digital link (if thats what you are suggesting will be suitable)...

To get multi channel via anlogue it obviously needs each channel...

So only multiple analog outs will work, not a card that has SPDIF? I know Microsoft is trying to push the envelope here, but there are very few multichannel analog out cards available. It seems like that would exclude the vast majority of people using HTPCs, let alone those who actually use DVD-ROM content. I hope that this isn't the case.

Well think about it... If you output WMA to your processor via digital whats it going to do ???

What you are suggesting is an WMA to DD encoding process (not simply AC3 passthrough) that requires specialist hardware also that is MUCH rarer than multichannel soundcards (which are pretty common)...
