ok I have a new macbook and it has that glossy lcd screen what I would like to know is is there a way to get a big piece of this and put it on my 46" XBR3

the reason I ask is this really increases the black level in the picture or atleast the precieved black level I have seen LCD monitors at the store for computers and the ones with the glossy finish on them look way better and darker than the others

would this be practical or am I missing something about this glossy finish if it is to big then will it not work and why dont TV makers put this on the big LCD's then they could compete with Plasmas for black level

One reason they don't use the glossy finish on LCD TV's is the elimination of reflections from windows and lights in the room. It gives you the choice between plasma and LCD depending upon what type of room you have.

The glossy screens on notebooks are ANTI-RELFECTIVE, although in truth, they are merely low reflecting (about 2%). On a normal LCD (and even plasma) 4% of the light in the room bounces off the screen (index of refraction miss-match). On a bright day, the reflection can be as high as 25-50 nits. This washes out you black level and will dilute your colors with white light. This is why it is hard to read ATMs in the afternoon.

The anti (or low) relfecting coatings are too expensive and nearly imposssible to buy for very large LCD displays. It could add $100's to the display, if they can do it at all.

The other thing to keep in mind that there are two types of reflection...shiney and diffused. All LCDs use diffused so you do not see your reflection. Anti-reflection films are always shiney because you will have less ill-effects from reflection on shiney surfaces than on diffused surfaces. BUT, you will always see yourself. Shiney and diffused are mutually exclusive. You get rid of on problem by adding the other.
