High pass filter change impuls

Can anyone explain to a rookie why Step, Etc, and impulse change if I change HPF. I have always used my subwoofers without hpf because I have so much headroom left, (3 15 "and 4 18" dayton)
I think everything gets better without filters as I measure anyway. I hear no difference, I just want to learn
