I haven't heard it on my XA-1 yet (not noticeable), but on several of my other DVD players I have. I am not sure if this is caused by the AV receiver or the DVD player. It's distracting for sure....

yes, I get this too.

It happens when ever the screen changes i.e when skipping a chapter, when a menu selection goes to a new screen, etc.

to me it sounds like the something is getting re-synched with every screen change- but i have no idea what it actually is.

it is irritating and it would be great if a firmware update could fix this.

so far one of my few annoyances with this player- in fact, I would rate this as more annoying than the slow boot up time. I have patience, but I cringe every time i have to make a menu selection

Thank you guys...

I'm glad I am not alone in this, but then again I'm sorry for us. :)

Yes, hopefully a firmware upgrade will clear this up....

My player ( one of the very first...bought the Saturday before official launch), had numerous issues besides this, and the player locking up upon start up several times was the last straw.

So I returned it reluctantly after 11 days.

I will buy another, but I am waiting for something official as to firmware upgrades for at least some of the issues...before buying another.

In the time I had the player, I could find no cure for the pops.

I would be shocked if people who say they have no major problems with there player, are not including the popping in there opinion, so I have to assume that this is not common to all players, and/or set ups....as its hard to ignore...especially if your tweeters cost well over 200.00 each to replace. ;)

I see....

well the last thing I want to do is replace my speakers! Plus, I'm reluctant to hook up my Onix Melody SP3 Tube amp because I don`t know if this static pops will ruin the tubes!

I'm wondering now if there's a way to use analog out for the sound while still use HDMI for video.....

?
Try in the setup for the A1 audio set it to output PCM or take it out of the "auto" mode.
Ya will try that....

:)

reporting back in a bit....
it still does it, when I change resolution only!

When going through chapters everything is ok, but when I change resolution it still does the same thing! Oh and even when I press pause...and then play again...

yes. Connect HDMI to the display and analog audio cables to the receiver. No?

I'd leave resolution on 1080i.
It just seems that there are many problems with the analog outputs (low bass and other issues). For now I'm using the optical out without problems and next week I should have my Panasonic SA-XR70 receiver at which time I will be able to use the hdmi for both audio and video (hopefully without issues). For now we all wait for a firmware update to fix the audio problems. :)

well, I have another issue with that, but I do not know if it is my Sharp LC-26GD4U or not.

When i set the resolution to 1080i then the playback on the screen has a very fast, very small movement, in the up-down direction...

It might be the Sharp LCD, or the DVD player, I am not sure.

:(

Robert D: Since I have a 2ch Tube Amp, that has RCA in only, I'd like to be able to use that for sound...so toslink is a no go for me...

I'm wondering if I can do this: HD-A1 HDMI out --> 1130HD Media Box HDMI in --> Media Box RCA out --> Tube Amp RCA in. That way I coudl control the volume from the remote of the 1130HD....? Am I correct? Will the crossover connection degrade the sound quality?

Okay, about the issue of playback flickering up ad down....It does not happen with SD-DVD movies! Only with HD-DVDs!

Sigh.

Sigh.
In your display or projector is there a video setting to select either film/movie and video? If so then make sure that is set to film or movie mode. Also set the HD-A1 to film or movie mode (I think it's set to audio as the default).
thank you Robert, will try that as soon as I get home!!

:)
i had a really ferociously loud pop, and than stutter on cinderella man (in the middle of chapter 10) but i exchanged the disc and no issues since, ah my first bad hd dvd :)

thankfully that's the only issue i've had with the xa1, and i'm happy it was the disc and not the player.
Yes, I have this problem too on my Anthem AVM-20. Anthem has released a fix for it. More info from their readme file describes (kinda) why this happens:

Quote:
Changes from v2.10 to v2.12:

4. Adjusted muting time and related factors during bitstream change to prevent cutting off of track beginning and, as much as possible, popping due to format transition. Thanks to all involved. This sort of problem is inherent with multiple format detection (PCM/AC3/DTS/MPEG/etc and all variations including DTS-CD), and normally results in a tradeoff between presence of popping vs losing beginning of track, further complicated by pause/skip/scan modes and lack of operational standards within.
