High power amp and Onkyo 805 .. a waste?

Hey guys, I have a question reguarding my system setup. I have an older Carver 380 wpc amp just kinda laying around. I now have an Onkyo 805 with Boston Acoustic speakers. I use floorstanding VR-3's with a crossover of 80hz (might be able to use lower) as my mains. Now if I was using the floorstanders as full-range, I guess that i could see the need to use a higher power amp for the lower frequency reinforcement. But if I am only using a crossover of 80hz, is all that extra power just way overkill, when the 130wpc from the Onkyo should be more than sufficient? My speakers have a 93 db efficiency rating. The reason I ask is I have another two channel stereo setup using an older Yamaha receiver with a 25 year old pair of Boston towers with dual 8" woofers. Since that receiver has pre-outs, I was just wondering which system would benefit most from the amp? There is no sub in the stereo setup, and an Epik Castle on the way for the HT. Suggestions?

i would at least hook it up and see if you can hear the difference and the system without

a powered sub will always benefit from more power.
even if your preamp is a receiver, there will still be large audible benefits of using an external amp.

Even though I am crossing at 80hz? What would be my benefits?

not as much most of the power is used in the lower region say 100hz down.

crossing over at 80 takes the strain off considerably.
I'm running my 805 with a Rotel RMB-1075 ([email protected]) powering the front 5 speakers (L,C,R,LS,RS) and leave the rear-surrounds powered by the 805.

It made a HUGE difference for me.

I have no doubt that a dedicated pre/pro would sound better, but I am content with the results for now with all the inputs, decoding and processing on the 805.

IMHO, the amp in the 805 is best used by those who have never enjoyed the benefit of a quality external amp. Anyone else is likely going to be disappointed, especially in 2CH music.

I've done A LOT of A/B testing with and without the Rotel amp, and the difference is almost shocking to me.

Okay, thanks guys....I might just have to pop it in to see. It shouldn't take long. Should I re-run Audessey after adding it?
