How come when Im on my sony50inch screen using the ps3 or my pc monitor, their native resolutions are 1080p or w/e, when you use that resolution, all the items or anything on the screen is very or just small. When I use a 720p or w/e resolution, the items appear bigger and hence look more pleasing. Is this normal and if so why do u guys prefer the smaller items?

This is all for desktop or menue screen of course, ingame the higher resolution is mostly prefered.

Higher resolutios usually means a sharper, more detailed image - or more items like icons (or text characters on a line) visible at the same time.

As for the icons and fonts: Most systems allow for bigger sizes like increased text heights and larger icons.

That's because a 720p image is basically being enlarged on your 1080p tv. If a tv/monitor did not scale lower resolutions, you would essentially have a letterbox(bars on top, bottom, and sides) image on your screen. Basically when you send the 720p image, its resolution is more than likely around 1280x720. The tv then just takes that image and stretches it, in a more complex way than what it sounds, to the sides and fills in the missing information so you don't have black snow everyother pixel. This will almost double the size of the icons from the original size they were ment to be. Now, i don't really know if it's possible to do it on the ps3 but on a PC you can just go into your properties and adjust icon sizes to large and also increase font sizes, which is capable on the ps3.

i bought a 1080 tv recently and although its always more future proof with a higher resolution, my current setup doesn't really warrent it and now i find out the freeview hd is only going to be 720! couldn't believe it, less than a 100 more lines than normal pal!

my mum needs a new television and im telling her to get a 720p if it saves a few quid cos she will never get a blueray player or a ps3 or sky hd...

there is no doubt that a quality old crt displays a freeview pic better than most lcd's so unless you have hd gear to plug into it, you may be a little disapointed... especially the bigger the tv gets!
