Ok I think I am missing something. I have a Toshiba TN61X81 4:3 HD Ready TV. I thought I could output from HiPix in either 1920 X 1080i or 1440 X 1080i for HD signals. To get the proper aspect ratio I thought I just selected the Letter Box option in HiPix and it would correct the aspect ratio but when switching between Letter Box and Full Screen the image does not change. It always displays in full screen. The 720 X 480p does display the correct aspect ratio but I think under this setting I am not getting a true HD signal correct? Also running the 1280 X 720p mode I get no output (except audio) I thought my TV did support 720p.

I am outputting directly from my HiPix to my TV using a VGA – Component cable.

Any clarifications or suggestions would be appreciated,

Kerry

kdraper,

I believe the letterbox setting only works with 480p broadcasts. Also, it only seems to work in 1024x768p and 1440x1080i modes, which are both 4x3 aspect ratio's. If you use either one of these modes, true HD broadcasts in 1080i or 720p will be scaled to 1024x768p or 1440x1080i. I have found both of these modes to not look quite as good as 1080i or 720p, presumably due to scaling artifacts. BTW, there was a bug with 1440x1080i which has been fixed in the latest software. I like the 4x3 modes for 480p broadcasts, in order to get a full size 4x3 picture.

I have the Toshiba TW40X81 (16:9 format). It is limited to 480p or 1080i, not 720p, and I believe your RPTV is also. Furthermore, anything other than 480p or 480i will not allow the PIC SIZE controls on the RPTV to change the display aspect ratio; the A.R. is set by the incoming video. I wouldn't be surprised if Toshiba made some similar A.R. limitations on the 4:3 sets.

Is this information useful?

I think his TN61x81 is like my TN55x81 in that it has no pic size controls. Those were added to Tosh 4:3 sets in the later models.

That is why I pestered Ray N and Cliff so much last fall about the aspect ratio stuff. It has to be done by the card.

My WinTv-HD has similar problems. The letterbox works for 1440x1080i but not 1920x1080i.

Thanks for the input. It sounds like the best resolution I can use with the proper aspect ratio is 1440 x 1080i. On my TV this setting causes the picture to look very jerky. I know that is probably not the correct term but that is the way it looks to me. The best looking picture so far has been 720 x 480p. I think I am not getting what I paid for HD 1080i.

Thanks again for all your help,

Kerry

There was a severe scaling problem in 1440 X 1080i mode. It is fixed in the current Beta and I presume next release (due tomorrow?).

Where can I get the current beta? Tomorrow is about 16 days from now for a new HTPC user.

Thanks,

I spoke with Telleman about this exact issue. The definitive answer is, letterbox only has an affect on 4:3 displays. So, if you have selected 1080i or 720p nothing will happen. If you select 480p or 1440i, or 1024, letterboxing will work. BTW there was a bug in the 1440i handling prior to the upcomming release, and it won't look very good. I do know for sure that this will be fixed.
