Hisense H9F... Is the hype well deserved and real? (Comparing Vizio M558-G1 & Hisense

This is speaking to strictly picture quality. From what I've read, AndroidTV and RokuTV are far superior to Vizio's Smartcast. However, I'm not overly concerned with this as you can obviously add a better streaming stick to the Vizio.

I've read all of the online reviews and watched some YouTube videos on both sets. A couple of amateur reviewers on YouTube are comparing the H9F to OLEDs and Samsung high end QLEDs that are 3-5 times the price, stating that the H9F is very close (and in some instances beating) in regard to picture quality to the high end stuff.

In the measured reviews, the Vizio has better contrast and just about perfect black uniformity, while the grey uniformity is about the same on both. The Hisense measures a lot brighter than the Vizio and that's the one main selling point that I see for the H9F. Also, the upscaling on the H9F is supposedly better than the Vizio for 720p and 1080i cable/DirecTV signals (how much better can it really be though or how bad is the Vizio?)

Really undecided on these two sets for an outdoor TV on a covered/enclosed porch. Would be watching DirecTV 85% of the time, streaming the other 15%, and with video gaming.

Digital trends has good comparison reviews up in YouTube looking at the h9f, tcl r617, Sony x950g. They agree that the h9f is a really good value. It isn't perfect with some clipping/crushing of highlights and blacks, and a fald algorithm that is a bit slow. That being said, I would think that it is better than the M series from Vizio. You get fewer zones and nits with the Vizio unless you go up to the p or px series. I don't think people would say that Vizio has super awesome uniformity or no dse. Likely typical for a TV in that price range. More would say you have to pay for the Samsung or Sony to get better uniformity. Also Vizio isn't known for its upscaling either. That is Sony's lunch.

Also the Vizio interface can be slow compared to a tcl Roku. Sony supposedly has a faster Android interface than Hisense.

If the H9F is anything like the H8F, you can easily rectify the Contrast and Black clipping in HDR. With the H8F in HDR, lowering contrast to 42 allows you to resolve up to 3,600 - 3,700 nit highlights. Raising the Brightness to 54 (when Contrast is set to 42) resolves more black detail without raising it above black. The Hisense H8F (and apparently the H9F) requires more user involvement to maximize HDR10. I wish Hisense would release a firmware update that way the user wouldn't have to go through all of that.
My experience with Hisense was so bad they'd have to give their sets away for free for me to take on. This was May of 2018 just before the world cup. They claimed they would have exclusive coverage of the games on in 4k, they did not. Their sets wouldn't even last an hour when playing 4k content. They shut down and you had to unplug to get them back. Fraudulent reviews on multiple sites, it was pathetic. They came out and replaced the main board with the same results. All this for a $230 49" tv. I eventually gave up after they continually blew me off and I returned it to Walmart.

Lesson learned for me. So the picture may be great on the new sets, just hope nothing goes wrong.
I had the vizio m658 and returned it for the H9F, unfortunately I cant comment on the up scaling as I dont have cable or satellite, however I do find the motion much better than the vizio I had and the HDR highlights are FAR better. Using the internal OS I find much more responsive than the vizio as well, though if your trying to tweak setting while watching something then what ever you are watching will stutter while thats happening.

As far as a follow up question to which TV am I happier with, that would be the H9F for sure.

Thanks for the the replies so far.

I actually just returned the 55" 6 series TCL yesterday. When watching a native 4k show, it genuinely had a stunning picture. I had a problem with the TV randomly turning off after about 45 minutes of use. Also, I could see the vertical strips of LEDs very clearly when there was anything light colored on the screen which was very annoying. Not sure if it was just a bad panel or if they're all like that.

I compared the measurements on the Rtings.com site. They're the ones claiming that the 2019 Vizio M Quantum has near perfect black uniformity. They list it right after (and before a couple) of the OLED sets, giving it a 9.7 out of 10. According to that chart, it's the number one LCD for black uniformity. Hisense H9F is on the left and Vizio M quantum is on the right in the picture.
