Hitachi 57SWX20B vs Mitsubishi WS-55511?

726 Views 10 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Kipp Jones
Hey all-

I've been shopping for a while, and have it narrowed down to these two sets.

The pictures seem pretty damn comparable, and they both have a huge set of features. My main thing is ambient light, but w/ the Mits protective shield off, both TV's seem the do fine with glare.

So.... is there anything big I should be aware of?? Or is it coin-flipping time??

Thanks,

Nate

I too have look at these sets. they don't seem like comparable sets to me though (feature wise). the mits has a built in hdtv tuner and the SWX doesn't. are they close in price?
They are pretty close... actually I realize I meant the WS-55411, w/o the HDTV tuner. The only salient diffences I could find are:

1. The Mitsubishi uses firewire, where the Hitachi supports DVI

2. The Hitachi is silver and snazzier looking

Other than that, picture-wise it seems like a toss-up...
Oh yeah, and

3. The Hitachi is 2" bigger diagonally
One of the reasons I got a 57TWX20B was the tremendous amount of info available here in the forums on how to set them up to shine in PQ. Can't speak for the MITS....

Larry
SWX has better and brighter HD wideneck CRT's and features and anti-glare screen.

It also has a better sound system and better remote control.

SWX has a superior picture on SDTV signals and better upconversion

It also will display a 720p signal.

In www.theperfectvisionmag.com

or TPV, www.avguide.com the SWX was ranked in the buyers guide against the Pioneer ELITE for $5900 MSRP and the Mits 711 Diamond for $5999 MSRP.

The Hitachi SWX 57" was the only one to reciever perfect "5" 's across for PQ while the ELITE and 711 got 3 and 4's ; and it held up, even bested the ELITE in a back to back shootout.

Here is the last paragraph of the review back to back against the Pioneer ELITE:

"The 57SWX20B is my current favorite of the RPTVs I've reviewed, and I feel confident that this set, when carefully calibrated, can hold its own, picture-wise, with any similarly sized competitor, regardless of price. As I made measurements and dug deeply into the service and convergence menus, I was greatly impressed at the unusual yet effective way Hitachi has designed certain technical aspects of this set, including the very obvious efforts the company made to improve last year's model. The 57SWX20B may not have the best-looking cabinet, but its overall picture quality is definitely among the very best, and at a price I consider a bargain. "

For Half the price....(MSRP) and even less street price. (CC sells them for $2699 on sale)

SWX is easily the best value if performance for the dollar is a factor or matters to you.

cool, thanks for the great info. Yeah, the 57swx20b looked really good, and I just saw it again today, and the picture's really nice.

Now, what about the Toshiba 57HDX82? I saw it and I really liked the pic too, and then I learned it has the same CRTs as the Hitachi, made by Hitachi and everything. Plus it looks like I can save about $600-700, which is a lot of $$. Comments??

It does not have the same CRT's as the SWX.

They are made by hitachi... But Hitachi claims they are slightly lower spec.

Toshiba is also double the *serious* repair rate of Hitachi according to consumer reports and I have never read as glowing reviews about the Toshiba as I have about the Hitachi in the magazines.

Toshiba also smears fine detail on DVD with thier upconversion to 540p, some claim not to care, but I would.

You get what you pay for.. I am not a Toshiba fan I guess. I think thier quality control is lacking...

Well, I went ahead and took the plunge on a Hitachi 57SWX20B from uecweb.com, hopefully they fixed whatever was wrong with it during the refurb process.

Anyways, I figure at 50+% off, I can buy a super-duper extended warranty from Warrantech or something and still be > $1000 ahead.

Thanks for all the advice. I really wanted the 57SWX, so hopefully the refurb avenue will let things work out. Wish me luck!
IMO the Mits 55" units need a stand to elevate them to a proper viewing height. Too low for me. I am 6'4". I felt like I had to slouch at my friends home.
