Has anyone fed their Hitachi 51S500 or 57S500 a 960i signal? Does it handle it, and how well? I am thinking about picking up one of these models, but want to make sure it supports 960i before I buy. Thanks a lot.

maybe a dumb question, but what kind of source will feed a 960i signal?

dogongt,

Many HTPC users feed 960i to their HD monitors to avoid the overscan issues that exist with 1080i. I will be doing this. I already do it with my current set.

Marc,

540p is not better than 960i, its not even close. 960i is nearly double the resolution, and it is quite obvious by looking at it. There is not much of a discernable difference between 960i and 1080i IMO. If the TV accepts it and converts it to 1080i, I am fine with that. Can I select to convert to 1080i or 540p?

Both are converted to 540p/1080i on Hitachi for display.

Why not feed it a 1080i signal and bypass the upconversion?

960i will have no effect on overscan.... I don't think I understand what you are suggesting? Care to explain?
I have done some HTPC testing and 480p timings don't seem to have the overscan issues that 540p timings do. Perhaps this is why he wants to do 960i (I have not gotten any interlaced timings to work on my GeForce, you really need Radeon).

#1 some games support 1280 x 960 and not any 1080i mode.

#2 some games run better in 1800 x 960 than in 1920 x 1080

I really don't care if it is scaled to 1080i, I just want to know if it will accept 960i. Another question I have is: Can I control the aspect ratio of what is sent in using the DVI port or component inputs (480p/720p/1080i)? In other words, if an xbox game is 480p 4:3, can I view it with the black bars on the sides? Do any of the stretch modes apply to input from component (1080i/480p/720p) or DVI? Also, Why would anyone want to convert to 540p instead of 1080i?

Thanks,

Mfusick,

I am not sure what you mean by "If the CRT's only scan at 540p.. and it's converted, how will this help?".
