HL-S5086W - or something else

1202 Views 23 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  bicker1
I'm planning on purchasing the Samsung HL-S5086W. However, I'm wondering if there are other 50 inch TVs I should consider before purchasing the Samsung. I've been under the impression that the Samsungs were the best on the market, but before I make my purchase, I'd like to hear from you

Thanks

specifically I'm interested in any recomendations on other 50 inch DLP TVs. I've narrowed it down to DLP due to price and performance.
Samsung is the leading seller of DLPs, and their new HLS models are excellent. The 5086 is a 720p model, and you might want to consider the 5088 or 5087, their 1080p models.
You should seriously consider the HLS5087W instead. Its future proof with its 1080p input and the cabinet is nicer looking (marginally) than the 5086. I received my 5087 last week and can vouch for the fact that 720p material looks better on a 1080p tv than on a 720p tv of the same size. 4 Other important considerations you should keep in mind are :

- The 5087 has 10bit processing which smooths out color gratdations in in the image ... banding is highly reduced

- The 5087 has a USB slot which allows you to view pictures and such on the TV via a USB device

-The 5087 has a dynamic iris which greatly enhances contrast from the standard 3500:1 of the 5086. Blacks are definitely blacker

- The 5087 is only about 300-400 more expensive than a 5086W so in a sense is only about 15% more expensive

I was also very interested in a 5086W initially but after doing a lot of research esp on this forum, I changed my mind and was glad that I went with the 5087. My biggest fear was that games on my XBOX 360 would have lag due to conversion from the native 720p or 1080i to 1080p. The 87 series TV however have a newer processor to do the upconversion and using the "Game Mode" , I have not seen any lag whatsoever. Hope this helps :)

I hate you :) I thought the 1080p model was about 1000 more. 300 isn't that much for a significant gain in resolution.

A friend of mine has last years 1080p model, and it is awesome. I haven't seen a calibrated version of this years, but I'm sure it's awesome.

I'll have to think about this.

What about other brands? Anyone using anything other than Samsung (DLP)?

If you're going for a DLP I would definitely suggest Samsung, I'm not too familiar with the Toshibas because I'm not a fan of their styling. The other option of course is SXRD from Sony which is awesome but will leave a significant dent in your wallet and I'm thinking that you don't want a dent that size :)
So I just talked to my friend who bought the 60 inch 1080p Samsung last year. He basically told me I'd be an idiot if I didn't spend the extra money.

So, now I'm looking at the 87 pretty seriously. I need to do additional research, but I'm thinking the 87 may be the way to go. Not sure what the difference is with the 88, but I don't want to spend any more money.

Thanks for the responses. I think I'll stick with the Samsungs.
I was also considering purchasing this unit as well.

Seeing as how I am on a tight budget, I was wondering, how serious are the lip-syncing issues? Does it lag only when upconverting?

And anything else I should know about this unit? If the 87w was more around 1500, I'd be able to consider it... it's a shame.

So I assume your friend's set doesnt have these new features, right?

I am considering last years model 61 incher, used at $2k.

I am wondering if i should go for the new model with the 10 bit though? Maybe a smaller screen to keep the cost down.. decisions descisions..

Im also concerned that last year's model doesnt have HDMI, it has DVI instead

Zainag..I am looking at one of the new Samsung and Like you XBOX/ video game performance is the number 1 issue for me with all of the reports of lag on various sets. You stated that so far you havent had any issue with lag on the 5087. That is encouraging. But what kinds of games have you used in your tests? Any racing games like PGR3 or first person shooters with lots of movent since these kinds of games seem to have the greatest problem with lag...thanks

Last year's models had HDMI. The difference is, they could not take 1080p input via HDMI.

If you're looking to buy last year's model (HL-R), you might want to shop around and see what your local retailers have in stock. Regardless of their posted price, make them an offer. Now that the new models are coming in, they'll likely be quite eager to move out their older models.

I would not be surprised if you can get a new one for about the price you were going to pay for the used one.

Interesting. Were you comparing the 5087 directly to the 5086 with the same material/connection etc. to confirm your finding? Wouldn't distance from the TV make a big difference in screens this "small"? The 5086 has a USB port for picture display/mp3 playback, as well.

So the HL-R is the 2005 model 720p and the HL-S is the 2006 model 1080p right?
Not really.

HL-R denotes last year's models, both 720p and 1080p, while HLS denotes this year's models in both resolutions. I'm not sure about the HLR, but in an HLS if the last number in the model number is a 7 or 8, it's a 1080p set, and if it's a 6, it's a 720p.

So an HL-S5086 is a new model 50" 720p and an HL-S5087 or 5088 is a 1080p.

As for other choices in a 50" 720p set I think the Toshiba 50HM66 is well worth a look, and usually priced attractively even at B&M stores. Other than some premature bulb failures on last year's models, which Toshiba handled admirably by extending the warranty, there have been few negative comments here on the Toshiba dlp sets.
If you read my post I said I wasn't sure about HL-R, last years models. I never said an HL-R ending in a 7 was 1080p, only HLS models ending in 7 are 1080p. Samsung basically is causing a bit of confusion with their model number sequences from last model year to the new one. HLR models ending in 8 are 1080p, those ending in 7 are 720p. HLS models ending in 6 are 720p, those ending in 7 or 8 are 1080p. So while last years HLRxxx7 sets were 720p, this year's HLSxxx7 are 1080p.
I got last year's HL-R6168W (61 inch, 1080p, HDMI) for $2k used, with very few hours.

I also bought a HD-DVD player at the same time, and all i can do is drop my jaw...

Amazing!

The HD-DVDs are spectacular, the contrast is extremely good, but what suprised me, is even the standard DVDs look excellent with the upconversion to 1080i.

The Toshiba HD-DVD player does seem a little half-baked, interface-wise. But as someone else said, "All is forgiven when the movie starts".

So how did I do price wise?

:) There's no way I could compare the 5086 and 5087 side by side. What I have a not findings but facts that I gathered from the forum over the past few months. Now, the USB port is in the 5086 as well and I guess I made a mistake there. The rest of the infomation is pretty standard and is available if you look for it.

In terms of the distance, most people have a problem if they have to sit too far back from a TV to get the optimum picture. When you talk about going from 720p to 1080p, you don't have to move back any further to get the best quality, you may instead want to or not want to move towards the tv instead.

Yeah I've been playing PGR3 and GRAW for a week now with game mode in component on 360 with 720p output. No problems that I can see. The response is extremely quick. I wanted to go for a 5086 b/c I was worried that the 720p -> 1080p upconversion might create a delay that I wouldn't want. I have been pleasantly surprised though with the set's game mode both on and off. My PGR3 timings have been pretty consistent and I went from a 27 CRT to the 5087 - so go ahead and ake the plunge.

John, what was your previous DVD player? Did it do up-rez? I just picked up a Panny S97 at a very low price and it's uprez (I use 720p for my HLS5086W) and it looks really good (minus a few minor things here and there, as to be expected with DLPs). I wonder how the Toshiba unit compares as far as up-rezzing regular DVDs.

How's the sound, btw? And are you hooked up via HDMI for sound?
