HLN567W PQ Questions

271 Views 6 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  jbrinegar
Hi -

I purchased a new HLN567W on Sunday and I am a pretty disappointed with the picture quality. DVD's are fine. However, the picture quality from my DirecTV Satellite leaves a lot to be desired. I've read some of the other posts on here and I'm experiencing the same problems. Pixelation problems, skin tones are sometimes blurred and the screen just looks like it is constantly repainting itself.

So far I have adjusted the Sharpness (took it all the way down) and I have the color set between 35 and 45. It helped but it also took away some of the richness of the picture. I have an S-Video connection from my sat box to my tv. The sat box that I have does not support a component cable but from what I read, the component cable will not give me the improvement that I am looking for.

Here are my questions:

1) Is this a common thing with DLP and am I better off with an LCD? My viewing habits are 50% off the dish and 50% DVD. If I am better with LCD, can I have a few recommendations ?

3) Will downgrading to a 50 or 46 inch yield a better picture off the dish ?

3) Will upgrading my Satellite receiver buy me any more quality ?

4) Should I look for something other than DLP ?

Thanks in advance for your comments

You need to connect with DVI, on a 5065W and Hitachi (LCD) 50V500A, component and SV suck, SV being the worse:)
djc, I have a sammy 61 inch dlp and I think the pq is gorgeous-but on hdtv. Standard def cable is not that great, especially if your not using the best connection (dvi or component). dvds and hi def is amazing on this tv, and that is probably what you mainly want to use it for (besides xbox/gaming which is awesome). If you need a tv for good standard definition pq, a big screen dlp tv isnt your best option. Do you have a high def receiver? I think youd be happy with the high def picture
What is the resolution that the sat box spits out. Bet its 480i on regular channels. I just got a HLN507W with a cable STB and I needed to go through a "setup" procedure with the cable box to tell it what resolutions the HLN can take. I avoided 480i (even though the HLN would take it) because it was crap PQ, to put it bluntly. Even 480p (progressive) looked better. To put my Cable STB into this "learning" mode was not obvious; I had to hold two buttons down simultaneously to get it into the proper mode. But the onscreen instructions took me through it step by step. Maybe your sat box has something similar. - Ernie

Hi and thanks for the quick reply. I do not have a hi def receiver? Can you recommend one or can I ask which one you have ?
Cable and small dish satellite compress the signal enough so that there's not much you can do to improve it.(on a DLP) If you're going to be watching Direct TV 50% of the time, there are better choices.
dj, I use time warner cable, and my cable box that came with it is an hdtv receiver and also an hd-dvr recorder all in one. It is a scientific atlanta or something like that. I have to set my picture to 720p on the box itself. If you are using some sort of satellite service they should provide you with some sort of hd receiver, bc without it you cannot watch high definition tv.
