Just received an e-mail from Kin Beliakoff, sales rep from TV-Authority, that they have gotten word from Samsung that the 5674 will be shipped the first week in November. No pricing info. yet, when they have it they will be taking pre-orders.

The 5674 would be one set that possibly steers me away from the Mits, but I had heard it was dropped indefinetly. If TVA is correct, then this is good news all around because all their major channels like BB, CC, Tweeter, etc. will have the set ASAP.

Price-wise, I'd have to speculate that this set will discounted to around $[MSRP ONLY] bucks, maybe even less.

Just got off the phone with a customer service rep at Samsung. He told me that the latest information that he has says the 74 series will be released in Novemeber. He also said that he didn't believe it is a replacement for the 63 series. That it would be a series inbetween the 63 and 85. He did not have pricing but guessed that it would be $300-$400 more than the 63 series. He also speculated that many of the major chains like best buy and circuit city would not carry it due to inventory limitations and the fact that it is nearly the same TV as the 63 series which is selling very successfully. He speculated that higher end stores and online retailers will likely be where you will find them.

Again, this was just what I was told by a customer service rep and take it for what it is.

On another note, I asked him about the 1080P sets and he was showing they only had a 61" model being released and guessed that we wouldn't see it for at least 5-6 months. He had no other info on other sizes and said the TV will be VERY expensive.

The customer rep might be right, but... actually, I think if the retailer is carrying the Kirk model which is fairly upscale), then they most likely would carry the Tantus 5674 to address;(a) their HD2+ competition, and (b), the need to have a non-Kirk tabletop with the same basic specs. It doesn't make any marketing sense to only offer a pedestal HD2+ set (which confirms that HD2+ is a viable chipset) while several other competitors have more or less abandoned anything _but_ the HD2+. A good number of discriminating buyers are people spending $3000+ and they _are_ reading the specs. And if the hottest chipset in the industry is HD2+, why would they "settle" for HD3?

Of course, I'm only speculating and thinking logically. Marketing is my background and I can't help it. :)

I would like to have the best on the market, but we are the few. 90% of the people buying this sets will have no clue what HD2+ and HD3 are. They just want a cool looking set. Consumers should be more educated but most are not. I hope the major chains do carry the set. I just don't see them carrying both or scrapping the 63 series unless samsung puts a stop to production. Plus most folks like the sub-$3000 price tag you can commonly find on the 63. The 74 isn't going to make that. (I'm referring to the 46" model)

Again just my two cents and I guess we will see in a few weeks hopefully.

I really want the best set but unless I hear people tell me they can see a pretty prominent difference between the 74 and 63. I will likely still get the 63. It's taken me a year to convince the wife and now the price tag on the 63 looks pretty good for the holidays. If I tell her I'm going to spend $400 more, I've got some convincing to do!

My sales rep contact at Myer Emco gave me similar info yesterday. He said they would be getting their first shipment of HL-P 5674's around the first week of November. He and I are waiting to see one side-by-side against the 5663.

He also had the 5674 brochure and was going to e-mail the pdf.

I just need to clarify.... The HLP5674 SHOULD be shipping the first or second week of November, while the HLP4674 SHOULD be shipping as soon as the last week in October. We are taking pre-orders now at MSRP. When we get our "real" pricing we will adjust your pre-order. Just a reminder, pre-orders are not charged to your card untill the product is shippedto you. Feel free to PM me for more info!

Ouch on the MSRP TV Authority has listed ($3999 for 4674 & $4799 for 5674). I thought it was going to be only somewhat higher than the 63 series. Sounds like they are going to push it as a pedestal-less captain kirk model. Hopefully the price tag is wrong. If not, I will probably be getting the 63 series. Kind of sucks that all the other DLP manufacturers are using the HD2+ chip and are much cheaper.

I'll keep my fingers crossed!

Don't read much into that MSRP. Magnolia has the MSRP for the HLP5674 at $4,099. As TVA said, "When we get our "real" pricing we will adjust your pre-order."

mchuckp,

Don't buy a 63 (or 74 for that matter) without first looking at the LGs or RCAs, both should be in stores in the next week or two...if not already.

Thanks to some advice by several other posters, I'm now seriously considering the RCA HD61LPW163. Hopefully the PQ can match the 85s. If it does, I'll probably go with it, since I think it has a better looking case than the sammy (63 OR 74)

That's awesome gsiokis! I hope you are happy with the 74 when you get it. As I've said before, I'm certainly among the dozens, if not hundreds, of the posters here that have been putting off a purchase solely in anticipation of the 74s.

If the WAF doesn't plummet in the next two/three weeks ("just buy something already!!!"), I'm going to compare the 74s with the rca 163s.

Be sure to come back and let us know how the 74 works out for you!

Gus,

I am in the same boat. I really liked the low profile HLN tantus model clean cabinet and small footprint. I had my custom cabinets built for the dimensions of the 5674. I was so relieved to see this set will be available very soon. Keep us posted on its status.

Dam, $4799, glad I didnt wait and got a Plasma Panasonic 50PHD7UY for less than that. If that price is right, forget the 5674 and buy a new Panasonic Plasma 42 or 50PHD7UY.

The 5674 pricing in is in the Plasma range now. With the new burn proof technology, why would anyone consider DLP? Makes no sense. Its like comparing a ferrari to a corvette, both are good but no comparison.

Peace,

I also looked at the Panny plasmas, but a couple things:

- The TVA price will be below the MSRP's listed

- The Panasonic commercial prices are misleading - you need to add a stand or wall mount ($175 and up), at least one DVI/HDMI board ($145 X 2 for two boards, or $145 + $250 for a switcher)

- There are no built in speakers, so for those of us with "electronically challenged" wives who just want to turn the TV on and watch whatever it is they watch;) , you need to at least add some cheapo speaker to the TV.

Not saying the Panny's aren't a great buy, but the commercial HD plasmas are considerably more expensive when you add what you need to add to make them usable in a home environment.

It would not make any sense for a retailer to carry the 5674 if its price exceeds its competition by several hundred or a thousand dollars.

The 74 does not appear to be superior to its competition, ie the Panny, it appears to be somewhat inferior. ie the 6 segment v 8 segment colour wheel.
