Until I upgrade my TV, I`ll be using a simple Hollywood + setup, and was wondering if I should run the sound out of the H+, or from my SB Live, for best results. As always, your replies are appreciated. Thanks.
It matters what type of cpu you have. Myself and others have had problems with the sound blaster line of cards if they are used with via chip sets that are usually found on mother boards that support amd processors. If you are using intel, use the sound blaster until you decide to go with one of the professional boards.
automagic- I do happen to be using a VIA chipset with an AMD cpu, but I also have a Guillemot Fortissimo card, and a Diamond MX300(Vortex2)card that I could substitute for the SB Live- any preference on either of those cards? Thanks for your reply.
___I am assuming you own a SDTV by your initial post. If so and you are still using the Hollywood + for S-Video output, there is no reason not to use its in-spec S/PDIF output to your DD/DTS receiver. As for the Creative cards, the Value II’s are a great cheap gaming card (they are just Ok for HTPC cards but are compatible with KT133 and KT133A VIA chipsets) but for true HTPC use, think about a 24/96 Professional card as an upgrade sometime in the future.
There are 2 problems with the SB Live 5.1! cards (yep I've got 1),
1st if you use them to decode to analogue, the A-D's are really pretty crap in HiFi terms, but I've yet to identify a better option - there are cards with enuff A-D's for 5.1 decode, but they appear lack facilities like bass re-direction etc. that you get with the SB card
2nd. Even if you use digital out to a separate decoder, it appears from many discussions on this forum that the SB Live cards all provide digital out be going D-A-D, and not just straight pass through, so you sdtill get hit by the poor A-D quality.
