Scott,


As far as I read the Avia and/or DVE are going to be more in-depth with a lot more tests. Some prefer Avia for it's ease of use while others like the DVE's more advanced feel. Myself I think I'll be going with the Avia for starters and the DVE after a while if I'm not happy with how far the Avia has taken me.

The calibration discs do contain many more patterns that allow you to make other adjustments. However, one's ability to access those adjustments depends a lot on your specific TV. It can also depend on whether or not you are willing or able to go into the service menu, something that is generally not recommended unless you have a very clear idea of what you're doing.


In addition to the extra patterns, both discs also contain a wealth of information about home theater and some easy things you can do to improve your overall setup. DVE is a little more up to date. I also believe it's cheaper than Avia at most outlets.

It's been said the THX is basic and that Avia and DVE are better.
