Has anyone had the guts to attempt a home made wall mount?

I have. After installing a bunch of wall mounted plasma panels, I don't think it would be too difficult to fabricate a mounting plate using some aluminum 90 degree brackets. If your handy with a band saw and a drill press, it shouldn't be a problem.

IMHO, a very simple d-i-y project. All you need to do is connect two (or 4) of the mounting holes in the back of the TV securely to 2 or 3 studs in the wall. I have described 2 or 3 ways to do this in previous posts. A band saw, etc., would be helpful but it can be easily done using wood, rather than metal, and a Skilsaw plus an electric drill, or even unpowered hand tools if that's all you have.
